ROCKWELL AERO COMMANDER 690A, BISHOP, CALIF., AUG. 11, 2002–At about 1:23 a.m. Aero Commander N690TB crashed near Bishop Airport (BIH). The accident occurred during a descending turn between base and final approach. The twin turboprop was destroyed, and the pilot and three passengers were killed. The airplane was owned by the pilot, who was operating it under Part 91.
Elliott Aviation of Moline, Ill., has received an FAA STC RVSM group approval for the Beechjet 400 and MU-300 Diamond. The RVSM solution uses the Beechjet/Diamond’s native Honeywell avionics suite. A Honeywell AZ-252 advanced air-data computer, AM-250 barometric altimeter, BA-250 barometric altimeter display and AL-800 altitude preselector/alerter replace the existing non-compliant Honeywell air data/altimetry.
An AD for the Landmark 8000 terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS), manufactured by L-3 Communications Avionics Systems, corrects potential altitude errors. Technicians uncovered the problem after connecting a Landmark TAWS to the baro set voltage divider in a Citation 500 through its Honeywell BA-141 altimeter and AZ-241 air-data computer.
Southern Star Avionics has completed required flight testing for Cessna Citation 560 and S550 airframes and expects to receive RVSM group certification for the types early next month. The $95,000 installation kits use IS&S digital altimeters with integrated air-data computers and analog interface units. The company said the upgrade is available for both single and dual flight director aircraft equipped with Sperry SPZ-500 autopilots.
Honeywell has obtained FAA certification of an avionics package that enables Citation 500s to meet the requirements for operating in RVSM airspace, including domestic RVSM scheduled to be implemented next January. Honeywell’s STC covers Citation 500s with serial numbers between 001 and 0274.
Avcon Industries has a source of financing available for its reduced vertical separation minimums (RVSM) solution for the Learjet 20 series as well as for other Avcon modifications. It is provided by Commercial Capital Co. for 24-, 36-, 48-, or 60-month terms. More than 80 airplanes have been upgraded using the Avcon STC RVSM Group Solution. Orders for upgrading another 40 airplanes are booked or pending.
Following a management buyout of its avionics division last year, Swiss manufacturer Revue Thommen decided to seek business in new markets more aggressively than in the past. With that in mind, the company opened a facility in Addison, Texas, near Dallas, in January.
Wichita-based LJSC has received group certification for RVSM on the Learjet 24 and 25. The $124,975 kit consists of two IS&S ADDUs, two Rosemount pitot-static probes, two pitot probe doublers, four Tactair shutoff valves, one standby altimeter, six annunciator switches, wiring harness, associated plumbing, data package and on-site support for initial installations.
Twin Commander Aircraft has received an STC for three RVSM equipment packages for the turboprop twin series. One package comprises dual Meggitt Magic EFIS installations; another package consists of a dual digital altimeter and autopilot interface; and the third option is a hybrid composed of a pilot-side Magic EFIS and IS&S digital altimeter on the copilot’s side.
Business Jet Technologies last month announced FAA certification for the company’s reduced vertical separation minimums (RVSM) compliance package for the Gulfstream II and IIB. The Dallas-based company said the upgrade requires only “simplified augmentation” of the airplane’s air-data computer and uses existing altimetry components, significantly reducing cost and downtime.
