Cannes Airport Creates Environmental Code

An Environmental Good Conduct Code is now in place at popular Cannes Mandelieu Airport and signed by multiple stakeholders, including the French DGAC, numerous civil aircraft operators, air traffic controllers, airport tenants and various local environmental groups.

The code is voluntary, addresses primarily noise-control issues and calls for the signers to “respect the quality of the environment at and around l’Aéroport Cannes Mandelieu.”

NBAA Lauds ICAO Proposals for Aircraft Emissions, Noise

NBAA is welcoming International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) committee proposals to limit aircraft emissions and reduce noise levels in the near term. The Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) at ICAO wrapped up three years of work last Thursday with recommendations for creating both a metric and standards for carbon-dioxide emissions, as well as for reducing aircraft noise levels by 2020.

In an age when general aviation airports are under attack as sources of unwanted noise, Cannes-Mandelieu Airport on France’s Mediterranean coast has reached an accommodation with its neighbors. Just four years ago Côte d’Azur residents were threatening to shut the airport down.

Cannes-Mandelieu Airport has apparently reached an accommodation with its neighbors, who threatened to shut down the airport permanently four years ago. According to Umberto Vallino, marketing and statistics manager for the airport, the key is a noise-abatement effort launched in April using a computer program developed by A-Tech Acoustic Technologies of Brussels, Belgium.

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has commissioned a wind tunnel to help aircraft manufacturers measure the noise levels generated by aircraft landing gear. Industry historically has focused on measuring and reducing the noise generated only by engines.

Contracts Awarded To Accelerate ‘Cleen’ Environment

The FAA has awarded contracts valued at $125 million to several manufacturers to develop and demonstrate technologies that will reduce jet aircraft fuel consumption, emissions and noise. The contracts–awarded to Boeing, General Electric, Honeywell, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce North America–are part of the agency’s Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise (Cleen) program.
