Bombardier has proposed establishing 850-hour intervals for CSeries aircraft line maintenance checks (A Checks) and 8,500-hour intervals for the new airliner’s base maintenance checks (C Checks), the manufacturer announced at its May 28 European Regional Review in Munich, Germany. Engaged in developing a CSeries maintenance program based on Maintenance Steering Group 3 (MSG-3) since October 2010, Bombardier claims the “longer” intervals will minimize downtime and result in “more competitive” maintenance costs for operators.

Piaggio Aero announced a reduced maintenance program for Avanti I/IIs here at EBACE, extending the heavy inspection intervals for the twin turboprop. Under the new inspection schedule, C and D checks–previously due at 1,500 and 3,000 hours, respectively–have been stretched to 1,800 and 3,600 hours.
Qatar Airways’ private jet division, Qatar Executive, has been granted Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) regulatory approvals to conduct base maintenance services for Bombardier’s Challenger604/605 and Global series. To meet anticipated demand, the MRO has expanded its service offering with heavy maintenance checks at its nearly 70,000-sq-ft dedicated hangar at Doha International Airport.
United Airlines says it expects “minimal disruption” today resulting from its grounding of its 96 Boeing 757s after a check of maintenance records showed that the airline did not fully comply with a 2004 FAA Airworthiness Directive. A United spokesman told AIN today that the groundings resulted in about 15 flight cancellations, mainly last night.
One of the things that most infuriates Jim Morton when he’s on his job is when he hears ATC telling nearby traffic, “Caution: FAA practice instrument approaches under way.” Morton is an FAA airspace system inspection pilot, and he and his crew must frequently emphasize to ATC and pilots that “we are not shooting practice approaches.” His mission is flight checking the accuracy of electronic navaids in the U.S. and abroad.
An ATP corporate pilot who is a Gold Seal CFI and safety counselor is currently working on a rulemaking petition to allow pilots to accomplish the FAR 135.299(a) line operational evaluation in an approved level-C simulator in lieu of a line check in an aircraft.
