During hearings on December 11, National Transportation Safety Board officials described the final approach sequence of Asiana Airlines Flight 214, which crashed at San Francisco International Airport on July 6. The Boeing 777 was cleared for a visual approach to Runway 28 Left where, as per a Notam, the glideslope was inactive.
A December 5 report published by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau reviewed a May 17, 2012 unstable approach to Western Australia’s Laverton Aerodrome from the cockpit of a de Havilland Canada Dash 8.
Clay Lacy Aviation (CLA) is on track for certification of a Universal Avionics Fans-1/A+, CPDLC, Link 2000+ and ADS-B solution for the Gulfstream IV and GIV-SP. Installation in the initial certification aircraft is scheduled to begin in January, with supplemental type certification (STC) expected in April.
CLA is working with Envoy Aerospace on the certification process and plans to install and sell the STC solution at its Van Nuys, Calif. facility, as well as make it available to qualified Universal Avionics authorized dealers.
Duncan Aviation named Scott Heath manager of Duncan Aviation Sacramento and Duncan Aviation Hayward avionics satellites, located at Sacramento Mather and Hayward Executive airports. Heath has been with Duncan Aviation since 1998, most recently serving as an avionics team leader over the last 10 years for both the Fort Worth and Dallas avionics satellites. Before that, he worked as an avionics installation technician at the Duncan Aviation MRO facility in Lincoln, Neb.
Aircell will shut down the Airfone air-to-ground communications network as scheduled on December 31, and after that date Airfone users will no longer be able to make calls. Business aviation Airfone users have been using MagnaStar systems to make calls, and a variety of options are available to upgrade or replace those systems.
The FAA awarded a supplemental type certificate to Century Flight Systems for installation of its Century C4000 autopilot in the Piper PA-30 and PA-39 Twin Comanche. Prices start at $19,995 (plus installation). The autopilot’s features, according to Century, include “GPS/VOR/LOC/LOC REV coupling, fully automatic glideslope coupling from above or below, selected angle intercept capability when using an HSI (45-degree intercepts using a DG), altitude hold, voice prompter, attitude hold command, auto-trim or trim prompting.”
The Performance-based Operations Aviation Rulemaking Committee (PARC) last week publicly released the final report that its Flight Deck Automation (FDA) working group delivered to the FAA in September. The FDA group was established by PARC, which provides industry-led guidance for the FAA, to address the safety and efficiency of modern flight-deck systems for flight-path management, including energy-state management, for both current and future operational use.
Worldwide avionics sales in the third quarter totaled more than $1.72 billion, according to the Aircraft Electronics Association’s latest quarterly avionics market report. In the first nine months, the industry recorded more than $5.1 billion in total worldwide avionics sales. Last year, nearly $6.3 billion in avionics were sold. The amounts include all aircraft electronic products (both certified and noncertified), hardware, batteries and chargeable product upgrades from the 20 participating avionics manufacturers.
Honeywell Aerospace has signed an avionics dealership agreement with Saudi Arabia-based Arabian Aircraft Services (Arabasco). The agreement is intended to boost installation capability and reduce servicing time for Honeywell avionics-equipped business and general aviation operators across the Middle East. Arabasco is also a Honeywell-approved service center for avionics in Saudi Arabia and can provide retrofits, modifications and upgrades, maintenance and services to operators of Honeywell-equipped aircraft.
Esterline CMC Electronics (CMC) is displaying its Cockpit 9000 upgrade solution for C-130 and other transport aircraft at this year’s Dubai Airshow (Stand 1451). The integrated avionics system can extend the service life of a 20- to 40-year-old aircraft by another 30 years at a fraction of the cost of a new aircraft, the company contends.
