Hawker Beechcraft and Asia-Pacific distributor, Hawker Pacific, today announced the delivery of a fleet of five King Airs–two Model 350Cs (cargo-door variant) and three B200Cs–to the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Eastern Division in Australia. The turboprops will join a fleet of air ambulance aircraft operated on contract for New South Wales Department of Health for aeromedical primary response and inter-hospital transfers. The King Air 350C is the first one in the region that is fully dedicated to the air ambulance mission.

An example, at the AgustaWestland exhibit (Booth No. 5602) is the A109SP GrandNew medevac machine operated by Intermountain HealthCare’s Life Flight out of Salt Lake City.
Ricky Reno has joined Fargo, N.D.- based Spectrum Aeromed as vice president and account representative for military and government initiatives, where he is responsible for global sales and service. “Ricky Reno knows and understands every aspect of helicopter flight operations, most notably HEMS and SAR interior modifications,” said Spectrum CEO Dean Atchison.
A new University of Illinois study found that only 1.4 percent of the 27,697 medevac flights it studied from 2009 were “medically inappropriate.” All of the flights were performed by Air Evac Lifeteam, a helicopter EMS company operating in 14 states.
Saab has signed an eight-year contract with Scandinavian Air Ambulance to maintain the group’s seven helicopters and eight fixed-wing aircraft. Scandinavian Air Ambulance’s bases are located in Sweden and Finland. Saab estimates the agreement will generate approximately $7 million in annual revenues.
Last month, after years of prodding from the NTSB and extensive consultation with the industry, the FAA issued its much anticipated notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that tightens the equipment, training and operational requirements for helicopter EMS providers in the name of safety. However, the 133-page NPRM doesn’t stop with the helicopter EMS community.
The FAA released proposed new regulations for charter operators on October 7, specifically targeting aeromedical services. There were 135 helicopter air ambulance accidents from 1992 through 2009, with 126 fatalities, and 75 commercial helicopter accidents with 88 fatalities (excluding air ambulances) during that period.
This morning the FAA announced its long-awaited notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) regarding new equipment and operational and training requirements for the helicopter EMS industry.

Action Aviation and SJ30 manufacturer Emivest Aerospace have announced that the SJ30 light jet is now available in an air-ambulance configuration. Better known for its executive/VIP role, the medevac version of the light twinjet will be a “quick fit” option provided by medical-interiors specialist Lifeport.
