Saab has signed an eight-year contract with Scandinavian Air Ambulance to maintain the group’s seven helicopters and eight fixed-wing aircraft. Scandinavian Air Ambulance’s bases are located in Sweden and Finland. Saab estimates the agreement will generate approximately $7 million in annual revenues.
Last month, after years of prodding from the NTSB and extensive consultation with the industry, the FAA issued its much anticipated notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that tightens the equipment, training and operational requirements for helicopter EMS providers in the name of safety. However, the 133-page NPRM doesn’t stop with the helicopter EMS community.
The FAA released proposed new regulations for charter operators on October 7, specifically targeting aeromedical services. There were 135 helicopter air ambulance accidents from 1992 through 2009, with 126 fatalities, and 75 commercial helicopter accidents with 88 fatalities (excluding air ambulances) during that period.
This morning the FAA announced its long-awaited notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) regarding new equipment and operational and training requirements for the helicopter EMS industry.

Action Aviation and SJ30 manufacturer Emivest Aerospace have announced that the SJ30 light jet is now available in an air-ambulance configuration. Better known for its executive/VIP role, the medevac version of the light twinjet will be a “quick fit” option provided by medical-interiors specialist Lifeport.

The NTSB issued another set of recommendations regarding helicopter emergency medical service (EMS) operations, this time highlighting concerns with FAA oversight of public aircraft operators. These recommendations stem from a fatal accident on September 27 last year involving a Maryland State Police Eurocopter AS 365N1 operated as a public medical evacuation (see page 56).
