The Garmin Pilot iOS aviation app–which provides flight-planning capabilities, comprehensive weather information and navigation–now has worldwide coverage, Garmin announced today. Pilots also have access to expanded coverage of European charts in a single application, including geo-referenced FliteCharts and SafeTaxi airport diagrams. New features also include FastFind and Smart Airspace, which offer users more efficient flight planning, quick waypoint entry and intuitive airspace navigation.

Amelia Rose Earhart completed an around-the-world flight in a Pilatus PC-12 NG earlier this week, becoming the youngest female, at 31, to fly around the world in a single-engine aircraft. Landing at Oakland (Calif). International Airport, Amelia Rose Earhart returned to her flight origin and “closed the flight plan” of the original Amelia Mary Earhart.

Rockwell Collins’s Venue cabin management and HD entertainment system was selected by Sabena Technics for installation aboard a Boeing BBJ. The updated BBJ cabin will feature HD monitors and digital audio throughout the aircraft for watching Blu-ray disc movies and other high-resolution content, such as real-time flight information from Rockwell Collins’s Airshow 3-D moving map. These features are built upon a fiber-optic backbone that ensures maximum system availability and enough bandwidth to integrate the latest consumer technologies.

Regional fractional provider Executive AirShare’s operating arm, Executive Flight Services, earned International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO) certification. Executive Flight Services earned IS-BAO Stage One certification following an audit of its safety management system, organization and personnel, standard operating procedures, training programs, flight operations, aircraft equipment and maintenance requirements. Executive AirShare operates 50 aircraft in its fractional and managed fleets from bases in six Central U.S. cities and Buffalo, N.Y.

This month marks a milestone for NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS), the 35th anniversary of its monthly safety bulletin, Callback. Capt. Rex Hardy, a decorated U.S. naval aviator and test pilot, created the publication in 1979. His vision of a short, readable and informal format to present “lessons learned” (selected from the thousands of anonymous ASRS submissions by flight crews, air traffic controllers, mechanics and others) was an immediate success. Yesterday, current editor Don Purdy published Callback issue number 414.

Malaysian Airlines has confirmed that one of its Boeing 777s has crashed in eastern Ukraine, about 31 miles from the border with Russia. Flight MH17 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 280 passengers and 15 crew on board.
