A new survey by the University of North Dakota Aviation Department suggests that young people are being turned off by the prospect of a career as an airline pilot. Just under one third of the 205 student respondents (32 percent) said they are now reconsidering their plans to become an airline pilot. A further 8 percent said that they have already abandoned this career path.

The FAA has launched what it calls “a comprehensive review of the Boeing 787 critical systems, including the design, manufacture and assembly.” The agency said the review will “validate the work conducted during the certification process and further ensure that the aircraft meets the FAA’s high level of safety.” U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the move on January 11.

After asking for a show of hands from air charter operators who are experiencing difficulties filling pilot vacancies, FAA deputy director of flight standards John Duncan told attendees at this week’s NATA Air Charter Summit that he gets involved in discussions about pilot shortages in a lot of different venues. “From an academic standpoint, it’s going to be interesting,” he said. “But from a community standpoint, it’s probably going to be a little painful. This is an interesting dilemma for the aviation community.”
