Three more companies have joined Greenwich AeroGroup’s dealer network for the installation and certification of LiveAero Broadband satcom systems. They are West Star Aviation, with facilities in Grand Junction, Colo., East Alton, Ill. and Columbia, S.C.; Pro Star Aviation, with a facility in Londonderry, N.H., and Aviation Partners Group, with shops in Punta Gorda, Fla., Moscow, Russia and Kiev, Ukraine.
Ingenio Aerospace introduced a series of products designed to help aircraft manufacturers and interior refurb and completion centers deal with the rapid pace of smart-device technological change. Ingenio’s solution replaces in-cabin connectors with a USB-based receptacle into which various smartphone or tablet arms can be attached. The arms, which can handle as much as 250 pounds, include internal wiring for device charging. Devices fit into an Ingenio SmartPlate, which holds the smartphone or tablet securely and also contains the connector that fits the device.
Jet Support Services, which provides hourly cost aircraft maintenance programs, has begun a new phase of improvements to its customer portal, MyJSSI. Enhancements include simplified navigation, a cleaner submit flight hours page, better contacts integration and a new minimum flight hours calculator. JSSI customers can access MyJSSI from their computers, or through an app on their tablets and smartphones.
Making its first standalone appearance at an international airshow here in Singapore, software giant Microsoft (Booth E63) will promote a variety of software and hardware solutions for airline passengers, staff and pilots.
“The key for us and the reason why we’re engaging at the airshow is because we’ve been doing a lot of work over the past few years in the airline space and we see airlines as a tremendous opportunity for Microsoft,” said Matthew Muta, the company’s global managing director for hospitality and travel.
FltPlan introduced a free electronic checklist integrated with a pilot’s flight-planning account. It makes completing the checklist easier by ensuring that no step is accidentally missed. Checklists can also be transferred to other tail numbers, shared with other pilots and printed out. The new FltPlan checklist program provides customers with a template checklist for a specific aircraft that can be customized for their specific needs either by adding new categories or eliminating specific pre-loaded ones. Users can look at the checklist on their tablets or smartphones.
Heads Up Technologies announced an agreement with digital media content management provider Red Touch Media that allows Heads Up customers to access its media library through the new Heads Up Lumin fiber-optic cabin management (CMS) system and wireless media server.
Although in-flight fires originating in personal electronic devices are relatively rare, they often attract a good deal of attention and motivate operators to be prepared for the possibility. With that in mind, Industrial Energy Products (IEP) has been offering a growing array of fire-containment bags to the business aviation industry since 2009.
Garmin released software updates yesterday for GLO, a remote GPS/Glonass sensor for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, that adds new capabilities. Originally, GLO could provide accurate GPS data to one device via Bluetooth. With the latest software update, GLO can connect via Bluetooth with up to four devices simultaneously. A few changes have also been made to the functionality of the power button, which will now reduce the likelihood of GLO inadvertently turning on when stored in a flight bag.
Delta Air Lines plans to begin distributing Microsoft Surface 2 tablet computers to its Boeing 757 and 767 pilots beginning in January. Pilots will use the computing device as an electronic flight bag (EFB) to store electronic charts and documents, reducing weight and improving workflow on the flight deck, the airline said. Delta joins other U.S. carriers that have incorporated tablet computers in their flight decks. Delta is the first major airline to select Microsoft’s Surface 2; other carriers, including United, Alaska and American, have selected the Apple iPad.
Pilots will be able to use their tablet devices as fully functional Class II electronic flight bags (EFBs) thanks to the new Tablet Interface Module (TIM) being introduced by UTC Aerospace Systems. The low-cost solution has been developed by the group’s Sensors & Integrated Solutions division.
