Just as in the U.S. there is considerable interest in Europe in developing a solution to the sense-and-avoid problem for unmanned aircraft. A number of different programs are running concurrently under different national, international and industrial consortia, and while several have clocked up significant hours of flight test in surrogate or testbed aircraft, none have as yet flown on board an unmanned platform.

AgustaWestland (AW) performed customer demo flights aboard its prototype tiltrotor AW609 here at Heli-Expo in Anaheim, but with the aircraft still early in the certification process, few potential customers qualified to get on board. The FAA requires such passengers to be appropriately rated rotorcraft pilots, undergo simulator training in the company’s AW609 simulator, conduct a familiarization flight in the aircraft and receive a second-in-command rating. Two lucky attendees went through the process beforehand and took demo flights during the show, staged from Long Beach Airport.

Almost a month after announcing the latest schedule delay of the CSeries airliner, Bombardier still won’t identify the precise reasons for the slippage. Although the company continues to point to a lack of “overall systems maturity” for the latest change in service entry target from September of this year to the second half of next year, it hasn’t identified from which system or systems the problems might stem.

Bombardier attributed a lack of “overall systems maturity” to the latest delay of the CSeries CS100 airliner, now scheduled to enter service in the second half of 2015. In a statement released on Thursday, the company also said the larger CS300 would enter service six months later. Previous schedules called for certification and entry into service of the CS100 by this September.

Embraer’s newest business jet, the Legacy 450, made its maiden flight on December 28, putting the program right on schedule. Flown by company test pilots Eduardo Camelier and Eugênio Cará, along with flight-test engineer Carlos Kobayashi, the twinjet successfully demonstrated its handling and performance characteristics during the 1 hour 35 minute flight.

Bombardier plans to issue an update on the flight-test schedule of its new CSeries jet “in a few weeks” as program managers assess whether to maintain the company’s admittedly ambitious entry-into-service target date of one year after first flight, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft marketing vice president Philippe Poutissou told AIN last week during a briefing at the Dubai Airshow.

Bombardier plans to issue an update on the flight test schedule for its new CSeries jet “in a few weeks” as program managers assess whether or not to maintain the company’s admittedly ambitious entry-into-service target date of one year after first flight, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft marketing vice president Philippe Poutissou told AIN on Sunday during a briefing in Dubai. Meanwhile, the company will now quote only total flight and ground test hours rather than specifying an exact figure for time in the air.

Progress has proven slow–tediously slow–for Mitsubishi’s MRJ regional jet program during the two years between the 2011 Dubai Air Show and this one. In fact, program schedules reflect two separate year-and-a-half-long delays to certification since then, placing the company further from its elusive goal today than it thought it stood during the 2011 edition of the Middle East’s premier aerospace event.
