The fate of two Turkish Airlines pilots, Murat Akpınar and Murat Ağca, who were kidnapped August 9 as they left Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport (OLBA), is still unknown. The pair was abducted shortly after the completion of a flight to the Lebanese capital.

The only communication has been from a group that claims to be aligned with Syrian rebels demanding that Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu use his influence to obtain the release of a number of Lebanese Shiites who were themselves kidnapped in Syria in May last year.

That Bombardier’s new Challenger 350 has the seal of approval from its celebrity brand ambassador John Travolta is hardly surprising. What did grab people’s attention at EBACE yesterday was that the movie star has been working as a flight test pilot supporting the airframer’s efforts to get the new super-midsized jet certified. “I felt like an astronaut,” he told a packed Bombardier booth here in Geneva yesterday. “We did full performance takeoffs and climbed straight to 41,000 feet. This aircraft is definitely going to break records. It’s like a homesick angel.”

A pair of California Highway Patrol helicopter pilots saved the life of a hiker who was being stalked by a mountain lion just before sunset in the hills about 50 miles northeast of Sacramento. The hiker called for help after trying to scare the cat away by throwing rocks and shouting at the big animal. When the CHP arrived they found the cat standing face-to-face about 20 feet away from the hiker. The pilots flew low over the cat and scared it off, allowing for the hiker’s rescue.
