President Obama nominated Charlotte, N.C. mayor Anthony Foxx yesterday to be the next Secretary of Transportation. He will succeed current Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who announced in January he would leave the post once a successor is chosen. Under Foxx, Charlotte has developed a facility connecting freight from the city to global ports, along with a third parallel runway at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport.

When the 113th Congress commenced last month, Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa.) was officially confirmed as chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee. One of the largest committees in Congress, T&I currently has jurisdiction over all modes of transportation: aviation, maritime and waterborne transportation, roads, mass transit and railroads.

Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa.) will take the helm of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee when Congress reorganizes in January. He will take the gavel from Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.), who was prevented from serving another term as chairman because of Republican caucus rules. Shuster’s father, Bud, also served as chairman of the committee.
