The general aviation industry in the U.S. lost a key battle last night when the Santa Monica city council voted to impose higher landing fees, not just on transient aircraft but on all aircraft that use the airport. Starting August 1, even a Cessna 172 based at Santa Monica Airport (SMO) flown by a local student or rental pilot will be assessed $10.96 for each landing.

The damaged-aircraft repair team (Dart) of Cleveland, Ohio-based Constant Aviation completed its third EMB-135 (Legacy 600/650) wing replacement. Dart consists of maintenance, structural, engineering and avionics technicians poised to deploy to any location within 24 hours. To date it has completed three Legacy 600 wing replacements, four EMB-135 nose replacements and numerous structural jobs in the field.

Jet Aviation Dubai has been authorized to provide base and line maintenance for the Boeing 737 700/800, Embraer 135/145, Falcon 900EX EASy, Gulfstream IV/V/450 and Hawker 800/900 in addition to its existing approval for Falcon 7X/2000 line maintenance. Jet Aviation Dubai’s maintenance and FBO location was established in May 2005 as a joint venture company with the AL Mulla Group.

The facility has 45,192 sq ft of hangar space, a workshop area of 10,760 sq ft, and a two-story, 11,300-sq-ft FBO building.

Brazilian airframer Embraer has set two more dates for Embraer executive operator conferences (EEOC) following a European conference held in Paris last month. The North American EEOC is scheduled for May 7 to 9 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and will cover the Legacy series. The South American conference, slated for Atibaia, São Paulo, Brazil on May 14 and 15, will feature both the Phenom and Legacy series.

Beechcraft has appointed Flying Colours of Ontario, Canada, an authorized service center (ASC) for the King Air, Baron and Bonanza. The new status allows the Peterborough facility to offer maintenance, modifications, refurbishment and paint under the terms of the ASC. Flying Colours has a long affiliation with Beechcraft dating back to the early 1980s and the Beech 99. The facility employs 18 technicians.

Voluntary safety programs are based on trust. Can you trust the FAA? The short answer, when it comes to voluntarily reporting violations or voluntarily cooperating with an FAA investigation, is no. You absolutely cannot trust the FAA to look out for your interests, especially the interests of maintaining your certificate or livelihood.

On April 9, the NTSB held a public meeting to discuss the crash of a LifeNet helicopter in Mosby, Mo., on Aug. 26, 2011. The Eurocopter AS350B2 ran out of fuel, according to the NTSB, and the pilot failed “to successfully enter an autorotation when the engine lost power due to fuel exhaustion.” What the pilot did not do, the Board explained, is move the cyclic control aft when the engine failed.
