An FAA suspected unapproved parts (SUP) investigation has found that National Precision Bearing, a division of Mechatronics and a distributor for Schatz Bearing Corporation products, publicly sold Boeing-designed bearings made by Schatz as suitable for installation on a type-certified aircraft.
A new FAA advisory circular has warned of the dangers posed by foreign object damage (FOD). Debris removed from airport ramps, taxiways or runways can wreak havoc on turbine engines and FOD costs the airline industry $12 million annually according to the FAA. The crash of an Air France Concorde in 2000 near Le Bourget Airport (LFPB) in Paris, the result of a small piece of metal the aircraft hit during its takeoff roll, underscored the dangers of FOD.
Eclipse Aerospace announced last week that an anti-skid braking system will become an available option on new production Eclipse 550 jets as a retrofit item to all existing aircraft. The new anti-skid system adds 17 pounds to the aircraft’s empty weight; the company says it will offer a weight-reduction package to help offset the new feature.
A Syrian Arab Airlines A320 sustained serious damage September 20 when it collided feet with a Syrian military Mi-8 helicopter at 12,000 feet over Duma, Syria. At press time, sources still could not confirm whether the aircraft was on approach to Damascus International Airport (OSDI) or had just departed. The aircraft landed safely without injuries to anyone on board. The Airbus lost a significant portion of its vertical stabilizer. The helicopter, however, crashed, killing both pilots.

The Eurocopter EC225 medium twin now has a traffic collision avoidance system (Tcas) II integrated into its autopilot, eliminating the need for pilot input in emergency avoidance maneuvers. The first such standard-equipped EC225 was delivered earlier this year. Offshore operator Bristow previously STC’d a Tcas II installation on the AS332 Super Puma; Eurocopter claims to go one step further, with more integration.

Armavia’s first Superjet SSJ100 sat idle at Sukhoi Civil Aircraft’s maintenance and training center at the Ramenskoye Aerodrome in Zhukovsky near Moscow last month, as the manufacturer and the Armenian flag carrier remained locked in a financial dispute. A second SSJ100 originally scheduled for delivery to Armavia in June also remained in Zhukovsky, leaving Sukhoi Civil Aircraft (SCAC) in the unwelcome position of storage facilitator while it urged the airline to settle arrangements to resume operation of at least the original airplane.
