Canada-based MRO Flying Colours has expanded its reach with the delivery of a reconfigured Challenger 604 for a Nigeria-based client. The MRO delivered the aircraft to the client earlier this year after performing extensive maintenance, refurbishment and reconfiguration work. The process took 14 weeks and began with a major pre-purchase inspection for the client, followed by calendar inspections (including a 96-month one), a review of all service bulletins and the interior work.

Rockwell Collins HeliSure

The amount of Rockwell Collins avionics products in helicopters continues to grow and the company is a significant supplier for AgustaWestland, Airbus Helicopters, Aviacopter, HAL, Russian Helicopters and Sikorsky. To leverage its rotorcraft capabilities, Rockwell Collins developed the HeliSure family of products, designed to help improve pilots’ situational awareness, especially in “congested and hazard-filled airspace,” according to the company.

The FAA has received numerous requests for certification of TCAS II installations in helicopters, most related to offshore operations, such as in the Gulf of Mexico. TCAS has proven successful in North Sea operations.

Prompted by industry demand, the FAA is considering approving the installation and use of TCAS II aboard helicopters but is concerned about certification challenges. Major operators have been successfully using TCAS II for several years in regions such as the North Sea.

A lack of understanding from rulemakers presents an impediment to the helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) sector, operators told the EASA at the agency’s rotorcraft symposium.

The output of information from regulators tops operators’ lists of concerns, according to Stefan Becker, head of corporate development at Swiss rescue organization Rega. Becker also spoke on behalf of the European Helicopter Association and the European HEMS and air ambulance committee. “It is impossible to read 900 pages in three or four weeks,” Becker said.
