Airbus has started final assembly of the first A320neo in Toulouse, France, with the attachment of the forward and aft fuselage sections, which recently arrived from St. Nazaire in France and Hamburg in Germany, respectively.
InTheAirNet announced that it received U.S. patent approval September 10 for a new in-flight entertainment (IFE) system for commercial and business aircraft. This is one of a recent series of InTheAirNet patent applications relating to airlines and private jets that the Irvine, Calif.-based electronics specialist believes will reduce both cost and weight for the end user and still provide full features, including the connectivity on which the current market is focused.
One of the highlights of last week’s Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany, was French start-up company Expliseat’s unveiling of a new economy-class seat that significantly cuts weight and engineering complexity. The new seat, called Titanium, tips the scales at 8.8 pounds per passenger, which the Paris-based firm claims is around half the weight of traditional airliner seats. This may translate into an estimated 3- to 5-percent fuel saving, or $300,000 to $500,000 per aircraft per year.
The European Aviation Safety Agency has issued certification of Airbus’s Sharklet wingtip device for CFM-powered A320 family narrowbodies, the manufacturer announced Monday. Airbus said it expects the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to issue its own approval “very soon.”
Airbus is announcing significant cabin enhancements to its ACJ318 corporate jet, including LED lighting, resculpted and restyled passenger seats, a media lounge, HD entertainment system and an optional shower in the aft lavatory. Wing sharklets will also be available on the aircraft, increasing its range to 4,350 nm from 4,200 nm.
Among the modular layouts available on the aircraft are an aft stateroom with either a divan convertible bed or a permanent double bed, a third lavatory for installation in the mid-cabin and a forward VIP/crew-rest lounge.
