The key topic of aviation safety, which preceded LABACE 2013 with the Bombardier Safety Standdown, will follow it on August 17, as Brazil’s CENIPA has organized a full-day National Symposium on the Prevention of Aeronautic Accidents, for 600 participants from all facets of the aviation community. The event will include simultaneous translation and will take place at the Transamêrica Hotel.

Nine hydroelectric workers and the pilot died when an air taxi crashed on approach to the Monte Dourado airfield at Almeirim in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest on March 12. The EMB 820 Carajá, an Embraer-built version of the Piper Navajo powered by a pair Pratt &Whitney PT-6A-27 turboprops, had been operated by air taxi firm Fretax since 2010.
The number of aviation accidents in Brazil in 2012 rose by 5.6 percent to 168 from the previous year’s 159, as reported by the country’s Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa). Last year’s figures–designated as preliminary at this point by the agency–represent the highest accident totals since record keeping began in 2000.
Total accident numbers have been rising over the past decade. In 2002, for example, there were 61 accidents.
Against the bitter aftermath of the 2006 midair between a Legacy 600 and a Gol 737 over the Amazon jungle that was fatal for all aboard the jetliner, Brazilian safety experts recently set out to show the nation’s prosecutors and judges that criminalizing aircraft accidents will never improve aviation safety.
