A recent and hitherto unannounced delivery of electronic warfare (EW) equipment to Germany highlights the growing export portfolio of Israeli electronic warfare firm Elisra. The EW/radar warning receiver equipment was supplied under an urgent operational requirement for the German army’s CH-53 helicopters, in advance of a deployment to Afghanistan.

India’s air force is planning to arm its growing fleet of Sukhoi Su-30MKI Flanker-H fighters with anti-ship missiles developed by the Russian-Indian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace. The missiles are expected to be ready to enter service in 2012 and are intended to bolster the air force’s ability to neutralize naval threats while they are still far from India’s coast.
After little more than 18 months’ service, the Airbus A380 very large airliner is delivering on the manufacturer’s commitments, including lowest fuel burn and operating cost and increased revenues and operators’ market share. “The A3XX [as the program was originally identified] promised a lot and the A380 delivers,” said product marketing director Richard Carcaillet.
Indian navy pilots and support crew have started training on the MiG-29K/KUB fighters with RAC MiG in Russia. The first of the aircraft ordered by India are due to enter service this autumn and the air crew have already flown serial-produced models.
With the A380 very-large airliner firmly established in production and airline operation, Airbus is now hard at work on its next project: the three-model A350XWB twin-aisle twinjet family. It is about to begin production detailed design for
the mainly carbon-fiber aircraft, which is competing against the Boeing 787 and which Airbus claims also could replace the larger Boeing 777.
Is Lockheed Martin’s Joint Strike Fighter a “bomb truck,” optimized for the stealthy attack of ground targets but of limited value as a defender of airspace? Critics and rivals of the multibillion-dollar international program have been sniping at the F-35’s air-to-air maneuvering performance for years.
Pratt & Whitney has (Hall 5 B20-B30) frozen the design configuration of the PW1000G geared turbofans for both the Mitsubishi Regional Jet and Bombardier C Series after finishing the final phase of demonstrator testing this past spring on an Airbus A340-600 testbed in and around Toulouse, France.
Versions of the Global Hawk are proliferating, with five now in service or development for the U.S., as well as the Euro Hawk for Germany and another for the NATO-AGS (air/ground surveillance) requirement.
If all goes well, the German air force could be the first air arm to routinely operate a military unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in European airspace. The first Euro Hawk should fly from the U.S. to the Manching test base in southern German during mid-2010 and begin operational flight evaluations from Schleswig-Jagel air base a year later.
