India’s National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) has selected the SMA SR305 diesel engine to power its new Hansa 4 four-seat light utility aircraft. The new turbocharged diesel has been developed by the French SMA consortium backed by Snecma, auto manufacturer Renault and European Aeronautics Defence & Space. The deal was announced on November 28 at the Aerotechnologies Summit in Bangalore, India.

A ban enacted in September by the southern California coastal city of Huntington Beach on all aerial advertising flights in its airspace, which could have had profound implications for general aviation, has been repealed before being enforced. The law, believed to be the first attempt by a local jurisdiction in the continental U.S. to regulate airspace use, was rescinded in a secret city council session in November.

CESSNA 501, ASHWAUBENON, WIS., APRIL 2, 2001–The NTSB attributed the probable cause of the accident to the pilot’s not maintaining aircraft control while maneuvering after takeoff and his inadequate preflight planning and preparation.

CESSNA CITATION CJ2, DEXTER, MAINE, OCT. 7, 2002–At 10:23 a.m. Cessna Citation CJ2 N57EJ was substantially damaged when it ran off the runway at Dexter Regional Airport (1B0). The 58-year-old airline transport-rated pilot and one passenger were seriously injured; two other passengers received minor injuries and a small dog riding in the aircraft was killed.

AERO COMMANDER 500B, RAYVILLE, LA., NOV. 1, 2002–At 11:30 a.m. the 1960 Aero Commander was destroyed when it crashed while maneuvering near Rayville. N1HV was owned and operated by the airline transport-rated pilot who was killed in the accident along with two pilot-rated passengers. It departed the Monroe Regional Airport (MLU), Monroe, La., at 11:09 a.m.

ISRAEL AIRCRAFT INDUSTRIES 1124A, TAOS, N.M., NOV. 8, 2002–The only occupants, both airline transport-rated pilots, of the Westwind were killed when the aircraft crashed on approach to Taos Municipal Airport (SKX). The accident occurred at approximately 2:57 p.m. after the Westwind passed the initial approach fix for the VOR/DME-B approach.

CESSNA 208B, PARKS, ARIZ., NOV. 8, 2002–At approximately 10:20 a.m. Cessna N514DB, operated by Brown County Financial Services LLC of Snyder, Texas, was destroyed when it crashed following an uncontrolled descent near Parks. The instrument-rated commercial pilot and his three passengers were killed. The aircraft was operating IFR as a Part 91 flight in IMC from Las Vegas to Midland, Texas.

PIPER PA-31T, HOBBS, N.M., OCT. 30, 2002–At approximately 7:33 a.m. MST the twin-turboprop Piper was destroyed when the pilot lost control shortly after takeoff in IMC. The sole-occupant instrument-rated private pilot was killed in the crash.
