Enstrom Helicopter (Booth No. 2528) sold only five helicopters last year and was forced to lay off more than half of its workforce, but this year is looking up thanks to new opportunities in Asia.
FlightSafety International (Booth No. 4606) announced here yesterday that its new Eurocopter EC135 simulator is scheduled to enter service by the end of this year at the company’s Rotorcraft Learning Center in Lafayette, La. This is the first EC135 simulator designed by FlightSafety to win level-D approval from the FAA.
At Eurocopter’s annual Heli-Expo breakfast press conference yesterday, CEO Lutz Bertling said the company is using the current economic downturn to retool its business for greater performance and efficiency, while actively pursuing the next generation of helicopter technologies including its Blue Edge and Blue Pulse blade and other research and development programs “so that we will be ready for the market once the upturn comes.” He also said

Donaldson is introducing two new products to its line of helicopter inlet-barrier filters (IBF). Inlet filters for the AgustaWestland AW109 Power and Grand and for the Eurocopter EC135 are slated for certification this year. Donaldson IBFs are operating around the world, from flight operations in Nepal near Mount Everest to the Sacramento Valley of California, protecting helicopter turbine engines during crop-spraying sorties.
“Even something as simple as sand ingestion can easily reduce an engine’s time between overhauls by 50 percent or more,” said Bob Stenberg, business development director for Donaldson (Booth No. 2847). The company specializes in the design and development of filtration systems and has recently received an FAA STC for an inlet barrier filter (IBF) system for the Bell 430.
A Coast Guard helicopter crew that performed a challenging rescue of an injured fisherman in the Bering Sea will be honored tonight with HAI’s Eurocopter Golden Hour Award. The award was created in 1982 to recognize the efforts of air medical service helicopter pilots who, through a particular rescue or through contributions over time to the air medical industry, advance the use of helicopters in this mission.
