SCHEMPP-HIRTH NIMBUS 4DM, MINDEN, NEV., JULY 13, 1999– The National Transportation Safety Board has issued its final report on the crash of a Schempp-Hirth Nimbus 4DM glider that killed former FAA Administrator Donald Engen and friend Bill Ivans, who owned the powered glider. It is believed that Engen was sitting in the passenger seat behind Ivans, who would have been flying the aircraft.

PILATUS PC-12, WESTPHALIA, MO., SEPT. 14, 2002–The turboprop single, N451ES, was destroyed, and the commercial pilot and only passenger killed, when it crashed at approximately 3:55 p.m. CDT. The Part 91 business flight was on an IFR flight plan and had departed from Lee C. Fine Memorial Airport (AIZ) in Lake Ozark, Mo., 15 min earlier en route to South Bend (Ind.) Regional Airport (SBN).

GATES LEARJET 25C, LEXINGTON, KY.,– AUG. 30, 2002–At 1:07 p.m. EDT Learjet 25C N24CP, on a Part 135 air-ambulance flight, overran Runway 4 while landing at Lexington (Ky.) Blue Grass Airport (LEX). The aircraft was destroyed, the patient was killed and the captain, first officer, flight nurse and another passenger were seriously injured.

BEECH BARON 58P, SWANZEY, N.H., SEPT. 2, 2002–Beech Baron N6688D crashed near Swanzey, N.H., at about 11 a.m. EDT, killing the private pilot and all six passengers. According to the airplane manufacturer, the airplane was certified for six occupants, including the pilot. The flight was on an instrument flight plan operating in VMC. Weather is not considered to be a factor.

Stewart International Airport (SWF) in Newburgh, N.Y., has appointed Clough Harbor Associates of Albany, N.Y., to lead the completion of the airport’s master plan update for future development. The airport is operated under a 99-year lease from the state of New York by National Express Corp. (NEC), the U.S. branch of the UK’s National Express Group, a $3.7 billion holding company.

Referring to regular operations at Teterboro (N.J.) Airport (TEB), Bergen County (N.J.) freeholder Anthony Cassano said, “This is nothing less than an attack of the skies similar to that which happened on September 11. We are not going to stand for it. We’re not going to take it. This attack must stop.” Cassano’s remarks came at an anti-airport rally in October at an elementary school near the airport.

GE Druck has introduced a new air-data line-switching unit to make it easier for operators to test their pitot-static systems. The LSU-105 unit uses manually switched color-coded valves to allow crewmembers to connect the test equipment quickly to the aircraft’s pitots. The unit can conduct multiple tests simultaneously to reduce downtime. Each of the four pitot-static channels can be isolated to allow independent instrument testing.

Observing the 107th Congress could sometimes be likened to watching a three-ring circus. There was the House of Representatives in one outside ring and the Senate on the other side, with the Administration or the White House in the center ring.
