RAYTHEON KING AIR B90, WEST PALM BEACH, FLA., SEPT. 3, 1999–Eight people were killed when the King Air ran out of fuel on an IFR flight from Pontiac, Mich. to Boca Raton, Fla. The twin turboprop crashed a half mile short of West Palm Beach (Fla.) International Airport (PBI) at 0325, an alternate requested two minutes earlier.
LEARJET 55 AND EXTRA 300, BOCA RATON, FLA., JUNE 23, 2000–“The failure of the pilots of both airplanes to maintain a visual lookout (while climbing and maneuvering) resulting in [an] in-flight collision and subsequent collision with residences and terrain” was the probable cause determined by the NTSB. The midair occurred in VFR weather, with a reported ceiling of 25,000 ft and 10 mi visibility.
RAYTHEON KING AIR C90, MUNSON, FLA., JUNE 25, 1999–According to the NTSB, poor judgment killed a pilot and his passenger when their aircraft came apart in flight during a midmorning journey up the west coast of Florida.
GULFSTREAM IV AND BELL 206, SAN DIEGO, CALIF., MAY 12, 2001–Thirteen people–pilots, passengers and line-service personnel–escaped injury when the rotor blades of an engine-starting helicopter smacked into the winglets of a taxiing GIV. The incident happened on a ramp at the San Diego International-Lindbergh Airport (SAN) around 5 p.m.
Early last month President Bush departed for a month-long hiatus in Texas and just about the same time Congress opted to take its August recess. So, the dog days of August descended on a more or less deserted legislative Washington.
The unions representing nearly 20,000 employees of the FAA have joined in a coalition “to hold the FAA accountable” for meeting its modernization goals and to improve working conditions at the agency. The coalition represents the largest group of organized employees at the FAA.
The FAA has awarded an initial $20.5 million contract to ITT Industries aerospace/communications division to provide the agency with multimode VHF digital air-to-ground radios as part of its next-generation air/ground communications system (Nexcom). If all options are exercised, it could be worth as much as $580 million.
In a letter to FAA Administrator Jane Garvey, 31 members of Congress have urged the agency to take immediate action to update pilot flight- and duty-time regulations.
With 13 aircraft in its stable, Executive Fliteways at Long Island McArthur Airport (ISP) in Islip, N.Y. has seen 45-percent growth over the past two years, and it is looking for more. The 20-year-old business acquired the former Liz Claiborne hangar at ISP in February and spent some $250,000 refurbishing and equipping the facility as its charter dispatch headquarters.
