American Airlines sister company AMR Leasing signed a contract to sell and lease back the 39 ATR 72s flown by American Eagle unit Executive Airlines. Under the terms of the deal, AMR Leasing will sell all the airplanes to an undisclosed entity that will lease the aircraft to Ireland’s NK Aviation, a newly formed joint venture between Denmark’s Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) and Kirk Kapital A/S.

Bombardier in late November logged a firm order for eight Q400 turboprops from Ethiopian Airlines and issued options on another four. The contract, worth $242 million at list prices, calls for first delivery some time between August and October 2010. Ethiopian Airlines CEO Girma Wake said he planned to deploy the airplanes from Addis Ababa on both domestic and regional routes of up to 1,000 nm.
Spain’s Air Europa will take delivery of six more Embraer E195s under the terms of a firm order signed between the airline’s parent company, Globalia, and the Brazilian manufacturer. Simplex Manufacturing has upgraded its powerline washing system, increasing the maximum water pressure to 2,000 psi. According to CEO Steven Daniels, the upgrade boosts endurance from five to 20 minutes with the same tank.
MD Helicopters Explorer Models 900 and 902 are the subject of an FAA Emergency Airworthiness Directive (2008-22-53) following several recent reports of loss of yaw control in the no-tail rotor (Notar) helicopters. The latest incidents occurred in October, both apparently caused by the separation of the vertical control rod from the actuator.
Equipment manufacturer Thales is one of the two main shareholders in Helisim, at 45 percent, on par with Eurocopter. The remaining 10 percent is held by Défense Conseil International (DCI). “We see our partnership with Eurocopter as our major investment in simulators,” said Chris Gane, general manager of Thales Training and Simulation. He is looking at opening training centers elsewhere in the world, again in cooperation with Eurocopter.
Marignane, France-based Helisim has started operating the first EC 225 Super Puma flight simulator, which was to be EASA certified as a level-D simulator late last month. The company, a joint venture among Eurocopter, Thales and DCI, is positioning itself to meet demand for simulator training as the world’s helicopter fleet grows. Some 80 percent of Helisim’s civil customers are offshore-oil transport operators.
Last month the Aviation Unit of Miami-Dade Police Department took delivery of the first of four new Eurocopter AS 350B3s. The remaining three helicopters will be delivered at the rate of one annually over the next three years. In Texas, the Department of Public Safety took delivery of its first EC 145.
AgustaWestland last month announced the delivery of the 200th AW139. It was one of two aircraft accepted by Hong Kong-based Sky Shuttle Helicopters, which in November changed its name from Heli Express. These were the first two of six aircraft Sky Shuttle ordered in June 2007. The company claims to operate more than 60 helicopter flights a day.
