Atlantic Aviation has launched a multimillion-dollar program to upgrade its facilities at a dozen airports, including major additions at five of its FBOs. At Houston Hobby Airport the company will construct a 17,000-sq-ft, two-story environmentally friendly executive terminal with 5,400 sq ft of office space, and two additional hangars totaling 80,000 sq ft of space. The project, expected to be completed by the end of 2015, will see the site’s ramp space more than triple to 6.7 acres.

Fuel distributor Avfuel has bolstered its network of more than 600 branded FBOs with the addition of four new dealers. London City Airport Centre is the latest location in the company’s recent UK expansion. The dual-use airport, the closest to central London, celebrated several milestones this year, including its millionth flight, 35 millionth passenger and 25 years of operation.
Recognizing the need for shelter for heavy iron at their airport, officials at Florida’s Hernando County Airport near Tampa have unveiled plans for the construction of a 32,000-sq-ft hangar and 1.3 acres of new ramp to be built on a four-acre parcel of land adjacent to the airport’s primary 7,002-foot runway. The new structure will have a 32- by 120-foot door, making it accessible by most business aircraft types. Airport authorities are currently looking for a maintenance provider or completions specialist to serve as a tenant, and say they will adjust the floor plan accordingly.
FBO chain Sheltair began operations at St. Petersburg’s Albert Whitted Airport last month, notching the 15th location in its network and its eighth in Florida. Sheltair won the airport’s request for proposals process and took over the facility from St. Petersburg Flying Services. The airport, located near the city’s downtown, has a 3,677-foot main runway and sees approximately 87,000 operations a year.
Opponents of development at Oberpfaffenhofen Airport, near Munich, Germany, were recently dealt a blow when a high court instead ruled in favor of increased general aviation activity. At issue were noise complaints from neighbors of the field, which has allowed general aviation traffic since 2008.
International aviation services provider Gama Group has announced a major development project at the UK’s Glasgow Airport. The company will add a new executive FBO complete with a 17,000-sq-ft hangar, capable of sheltering 600-series Challengers as well as serving as a line maintenance base, complementing the company’s engineering facilities in the London area.
Ikhana is offering a program for the Twin Otter that includes a package of proprietary modifications and enhancements coupled with full maintenance and current inspections. The Twin Otter X2 program uses Ikhana’s RW Martin (RWMI) DHC-6 re-life wing box and re-life fuselage supplemental type certificates as the FAA-approved engineering design basis. Installation of the package authorizes the re-life of time-expired Twin Otters to the new zero-time structural life limits of 66,000 flight hours or 132,000 flight cycles, whichever occurs first.
Imagik International, better known for its line of monitors for the airline market, made an appearance at the NBAA Convention last month to establish a greater presence in the business and private aviation industry.
The Miami-based company was promoting a new line of HD-120 LED monitors, ranging in size from a 10-inch in-arm screen to a 55-inch model appropriate for bulkhead for credenza. The larger 55-inch monitor weights 49.60 pounds and is just 1.25 inches deep.
AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings has introduced a new chrome-free pre-treatment to simplify the aircraft maintenance process.
Under the brand name Metaflex SP 1050, the pre-treatments can be applied over several metals and composites. According to the European company’s Waukegan, Ill. center, Metaflex SP 1050 brings time- and cost-saving benefits to the paint shop, and reduces VOC emissions by as much as 75 percent.
Another new product is the Alumigrip base coat and Alumigrip clear coat technology, which AkzoNobel claims will reduce cycle time by up to 40 percent.
Boeing Business Jet operators now have another option for CFM56-7B engine maintenance, repair and overhaul. Associated Air Center (AAC), StandardAero’s large transport-category completions center in Dallas, now offers CFM56-7B service through StandardAero’s engine overhaul facility in Winnipeg, Canada.
