Preliminary Report: Turboprop Twin Collides with Communications Tower

Hawker Beechcraft King Air C90GT, June 22, 2012, near Morgantown, W.Va.–A Hawker Beechcraft King Air C90GT collided with a communications tower near Morgantown, W.Va. on June 22 in daylight VFR conditions. The aircraft shed its right wing, left horizontal stabilizer and left engine before hitting the ground. The King Air was in radar contact with Clarksburg Approach Control at the time of the accident. The 22,000-hour pilot, the only occupant, was killed.

The European Business Aviation Association (EBAA) continues to protest that there should be a de minimis level of activity before business aviation operators fall under the requirements of the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS), due to the disproportionate costs involved and despite their ability to use Eurocontrol’s ETS Support Facility (SF) for calculating fuel-use by so-called “small emitters.”

London Battersea Heliport

London’s Battersea Heliport–now known as Barclays London Heliport following a sponsorship deal with the UK bank–is making the most of its unique position as London’s only heliport for the Olympic Games. It is situated on the Thames River opposite Chelsea, well west of the city and the Olympic Park, which is also close to the Thames.

The weather at Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on the night of July 13, 2008 was 1,100 overcast, one-and-a-half miles visibility with moderate rain, and wind calm. Albany approach control vectored us for a GPS approach to Runway 5. We intercepted the inbound course toward the airport.

An elevator designed and fabricated by L-3 Platform Integration is unique in that it includes a stop in the baggage bay.

L-3 Platform Integration, one of the premier cabin outfitters of widebody bizliners, had “a great year” last year, and with contracts in hand to do the interior completion on two new Boeing 747-8s, this year and beyond look bright as well.

Ken McKelton, v-p of head-of-state programs at the Waco, Texas-based center, pointed out that the shop has done green completion and major refurbishment work on no fewer than a dozen widebody airliner conversions in its 40-year history.

Accidents involving N-numbered business jets operating outside the U.S. drove an increase in the total number of mishaps and fatalities in the first half of this year compared with the same period last year. According to preliminary figures compiled by AIN, there were 22 accidents, three of them fatal, in the first six months of this year versus 19, of which one was fatal, in the same period last year.

Fly into St. George (Utah) Municipal Airport (KSGU) and you’re likely to have your airplane serviced by a Hansen. With the assistance of his father Lowell Hansen, who taught airframe and powerplant maintenance courses at nearby Dixie College for more than 30 years, Justin Hansen started a small maintenance shop 13 years ago at the old SGU airport. Lowell, now 69, continues to help his 34-year-old son at the FBO that maintenance shop has become: Above View Jet Center.

Russia was a priority for Bombardier long before it dispatched Q400 C-GLKU on a worldwide tour. Now, with issuance of Russian certification of the high-speed turboprop on June 6, Bombardier redoubled its marketing efforts in the promising market, sending the Q400 demonstrator to Moscow, Saratov, Kazan, Tyumen, Yekaterinburg, Kemerovo, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Yakutsk, Magadan and Anadyr from May 21 to June 9. Over the next 20 years, the Canadian manufacturer expects Russia to need some 200 large turboprops and, as of now, Bombardier builds the biggest and fastest, albeit also the most expensive.

Bankrupt Pinnacle Airlines suspended negotiations over pay concessions with its unions while it “reformulates” its business plan in an effort to issue a more competitive contract offer to mainline partner Delta Air Lines, according to a June 22 letter sent by CEO John Spanjers to all employees.

Made public in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the letter said that Delta told Pinnacle management that its competitors had submitted bids for Bombardier CRJ900 flying that undercut Pinnacle’s current rates by a “significant” margin.
