A number of air navigation service providers (ANSPs) have called attention to instances of pilots’ apparently not understanding the procedures for deviating around weather, prompting Eurocontrol to remind flight crew that they must seek approval from controllers before returning to their previously assigned route once they have resolved the weather conflict. The agency issued an updated version of that safety reminder early this month to explain to crews that they must also request permission to deviate around weather before they begin maneuvering.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will conduct an independent external review of the investigation processes used by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and publish a report of the results. The review, to begin with an initial visit by the TSB team this month, is intended to provide an independent and objective assessment of the ATSB’s investigation methodology and processes.
Xsight Systems, the same company that developed a system for detecting foreign object debris, recently introduced BirdWize, a software product for reducing bird strikes by more effective tracking of ground-level bird threats.

The U.S. business jet fleet worldwide recorded fewer nonfatal accidents and fatalities in the first six months of this year than in the same period last year. According to figures compiled by AIN, business jets incurred seven accidents in the first half of this year versus 22 during the same period last year. Although these figures included three fatal jet accidents in both periods (all under FAR Part 91 operating rules), the number of deaths dropped to nine in the first six months of this year compared with 14 last year.
Two pilots escaped injury on August 5 when their Flight Options Embraer Phenom 300 ran off the end of the runway and continued through a fence while landing at Flying Cloud Airport (KFCM) in a Minneapolis suburb. A local police report said the jet came to rest on the shoulder of a road just before 9 a.m. The Phenom had departed Pittsburgh at approximately 7:30 a.m. local time with only the two pilots aboard.
Runway 19L/01R at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport (KLAS) is closed until September 5 for construction. The closure is expected to create bottlenecks in the flow of air traffic both to and from the airport. Operators should plan for possible 30- to 45-minute departure delays during peak demand periods, as well as miles-in-trail restrictions.
The NTSB will offer a two-day training seminar on October 24-25 about the most effective methods of managing emergency communications following a major aircraft accident or incident. The training, aimed at aviation communication professionals from airports, airlines, charter and private business jet operators, will take place at the NTSB’s Training Center in Ashburn, Va. (near Washington, D.C.).
The comment period for additional ideas for the FAA’s upcoming redo of its airman certification standards closes August 23. A notice published last month included a first draft of the authorized instructor certificate documents, a second draft of the private pilot certificate and the instrument rating documents, as well as a set of frequently asked questions.
The South Korean government launched a special inspection of the country’s largest flag carrier, Korean Air Lines, on August 6, one day after one of the airline’s 737-900s overran a runway upon arrival at Japan’s Niigata Prefecture Airport (RJSN). The special safety inspection is expected to last three weeks.
