Air transport industry groups and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have agreed a framework for developing a binding mandate for aircraft tracking. At a two-day meeting that concluded on May 13 at ICAO’s Montreal headquarters, participants agreed to encourage voluntary expansion of flight monitoring by airlines ahead of an initial set of proposed new requirements being submitted to the United Aviation body by the end of September.

Indian airlines are facing stiffer competition and downward pressure on air fares with 40 new aircraft due to join the country’s fleet, taking the total capacity to around 400 jets by year-end. Existing carriers are now facing new competition in the shape of AirAsia India, which has just received its air operator permit (AOP) for domestic services.

Speaking to a gathering of reporters Tuesday at the Regional Airline Association Convention in St. Louis, Mitsubishi Aircraft head of marketing Hideyuki Kamiya reported “good progress” on the now six-year-old Mitsubishi Regional Jet program. Now scheduled for first flight in 2015 and first delivery to Japan’s All Nippon Airways in the second quarter of 2017, the MRJ has progressed to the point where managers expect delivery of the first test aircraft’s initial Pratt & Whitney PW1217G by the end of this month, said Kamiya.

Bombardier Aerospace announced Tuesday at the Regional Airline Association Convention in St. Louis that it has appointed CAE as its authorized training provider for its entire line of CRJ regional jets. Under the ATP agreement, which has already taken effect, CAE instructors will deliver CRJ aircraft flight training courses at eight locations around the world.

CAE operates 10 CRJ aircraft full-flight simulators (FFSs) in Charlotte, Minneapolis and Phoenix in the U.S; Copenhagen, Denmark; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Madrid, Spain; and Toronto and Montreal in Canada.

Embraer and SkyWest Airlines announced at the Regional Airline Association convention on Tuesday that they have reached a 12-year component management service agreement by which Embraer will provide support for the carrier’s entire fleet of E175s. The agreement includes more than 160 repairable part numbers, covering 21 ATA (Air Transport Association) chapters of the SkyWest Airlines E175 fleet. Embraer also signed a 10-year contract with the airline to provide the Ahead-Pro system.

Commercial use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) is possible once manufacturers demonstrate the airworthiness of their designs, according to the manager of the FAA’s UAS Integration Office. “It’s a two-way street,” advised Jim Williams. “The FAA can’t pull the industry up.”

Space Florida hosted a tightly controlled unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) flight demonstration on Sunday amid concern the FAA would pull the plug on the event, which served as a prelude to the Unmanned Systems 2014 conference this week in Orlando. With the exception of the media and participating UAS organizations, spectators were kept far removed from the launch area in a field at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

Statistics released this week by Airbus showed that commercial aircraft bookings for 78 airplanes in April increased its net order total for the year to 142, while Boeing’s order total for the month stood at 70, raising its 2014 net total as of May 6 to 291.

Northrop Grumman R-Bat unmanned helicopter

Northrop Grumman and Yamaha Motor USA have partnered to develop and market an unmanned “autonomous” rotorcraft system based on Yamaha’s RMax agricultural helicopter. The Rotary Bat (R-Bat) is targeted for search and rescue, power line inspection and forest fire observation missions.
