The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has issued long-promised guidance adopting the position of the Aeronautical Repair Station Association (ARSA) regarding when an on-airport repair station is responsible for large aircraft on its property under the new aircraft repair station security regulation.

D’Shannon Aviation has become the first out-of-state corporation to announce plans to relocate their engine overhaul operation to the Oshkosh Aviation Business Center in Wisconsin. The company is a major STC holder and manufacturer of upgrades for the Beechcraft fleet of Bonanzas, Debonairs and Barons. Scott Erickson, president of D’Shannon Aviation, told AIN, “We’re moving our engine business from ‘Race City’ (Mooresville), N.C., home of the world renowned Nascar engine shops to Oshkosh to take advantage of the highly skilled workforce and support.
Western Aircraft held a ribbon-cutting celebration recently to dedicate two new buildings at its 18-acre complex. The buildings, totaling 26,000 sq ft, include an expanded parts facility as well as a two-story building that houses support shops for Western Aircraft’s services operation. “We started this journey nearly four years ago with tremendous support from the city of Boise and the state of Idaho and today we thank all our partners for their efforts and contribution to our vision,” said Jeff Mihalic, president of Western Aircraft.
The Tampa Bay Aviation Association (TBAA) has set September 18 as its 4th Annual Safety Day. Daniel Slapo, chairman of TBAA’s Safety Committee, told AIN, “We’re averaging from 80 to 120 people every year, depending upon the topics. We partner with our local aviation authorities from St. Petersburg Clearwater Airport and Tampa International Hillsborough Airport Authority. We talk with them about our goals as an association, come up with a list of topics then ask our members who they recommend we get as speakers. This year’s program will be covering maintenance issues.” St.
Banyan Air Service recently received the 2013 Garmin platinum award for excellent sales performance as part of the Garmin International avionics distributor network. Banyan has received similar recognition over the past 12 years for consistently ranking among the top distributors of Garmin aviation products. Joe Stewart, Garmin International aviation regional sales manager, presented the award to Don Campion, president of Banyan, and the Banyan Pilot Shop team; then, in a second ceremony, to the Banyan Avionics team.
Elliott Aviation, an authorized King Air service center, announced their FAA STC approval for the activation and use of all Aircell Wi-Fi products in the King Air 200, 300 and 350.This includes the ATG 2000 and ST 4300 as well as the ATG 5000, ATG 4000 and the Aviator 200 and 300/350 and Gogo Vision with the UCS 5000 media server. The STC allows airplane activation for all Wi-Fi standards including A, B, G and N.
The FAA has certified the Garmin G1000H all-glass, integrated flight deck for installation in the Enstrom 480B helicopter. It is designated the 480B-G. “Combining the G1000H with the safety and handling qualities of the 480B make this an exceptional helicopter for anything, including personal use, police work and training,” according to Bill Taylor, Enstrom’s director of engineering. “We partnered with RSG Aerodesign during the design phase, and that really helped get the project moving.
Vector Aerospace Africa engine repair and overhaul facility, located in Lanseria, South Africa, has been appointed a designated overhaul facility for the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-140 engine. Located on Lanseria International Airport near Johannesburg, the MRO is a P&WC distributor and designated overhaul facility for other PT6A engine models and offers mobile repair team support for a range of additional P&WC powerplants.The facility also holds approvals from Rolls-Royce, Turbomeca, General Electric and Honeywell.
Gulfstream Aerospace recently named Darrell Frey director of International Service Center Operations. In his new role, Frey oversees the company’s three international service centers in Beijing, China; Luton, England; and Sorocaba, Brazil. Previously Frey spent 15 months as director, Regional Service Center Operations. In that capacity, he had operational responsibility for Gulfstream’s service centers in West Palm Beach, Fla., and Westfield, Mass.
The FAA is proposing to adopt a new airworthiness directive for certain Sikorsky Model S-92A helicopters requiring the installation of a main gearbox (MGB) failed pump sensor and vacuum switch wiring, installing an MGB oil auto bypass system, activating aircraft management system (AMS) 7.1 software to show a new visual warning and installing updated enhanced ground proximity warning system software that includes an aural annunciation of a complete oil pressure loss condition.
