The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) awarded a supplemental type certificate (STC) to Soloy Aviation Solutions for conversion of Eurocopter AS350BA helicopters to a Honeywell LTS101-600A-3A powerplant. The upgrade is already approved for operators in the U.S., Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

The FAA has issued a draft revised Order 8110.103A with new information about how agency personnel process alternative methods of compliance (Amoc) requests. Amocs are requested by companies and individuals seeking a different method for complying with an Airworthiness Directive (AD), but Amocs must also be approved by the FAA.

While it seems that most of the focus on fatigue issues is on pilots, the FAA is concerned about maintenance technician fatigue and has taken steps to educate the maintenance community. One excellent resource is the agency’s maintenance fatigue Web site, which offers information on fatigue issues and tools to help technicians and company leadership manage fatigue risk.

Citation owners who donate the use of their jets to fly participants in this year’s Special Olympics USA National Games to Lincoln, Neb., can rest assured that any maintenance needs will be handled. Not only is authorized Citation service center Duncan Aviation at the ready but Cessna is bringing a new mobile service unit to Lincoln. The airlift will transport some 800 athletes and coaches from all over the U.S.

The Aeronautical Repair Station’s efforts to create a risk-retention group to provide commercial liability insurance for its members is closer to fruition. In late June, the Aviation Alliance Insurance Risk Retention Group (AAIRRG), established by ARSA and Polaris Enterprise Group, received its certificate of authority (insurance license) from the state of Montana.
