In a move that makes it look as though the FAA is combing through old logbooks to find ways to conduct enforcement actions on commercial operators, the agency on August 14 assessed $7.1 million in civil penalties against American Airlines. Earlier this year, the FAA requested a record $10.2 million for maintenance violations at Southwest Airlines, and the FAA recently said that it would not reduce that amount.

An FAA team explored whether there is a safety and compliance issue with aftermarket repairs and replacement parts made under applicable FAA regulations but without the blessing of the type and production certificate holders, meaning original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Dassault Falcon will open a new $6.5 million factory-owned service center at Sorocaba Airport in São Paulo, Brazil, in the fourth quarter, bringing the company’s service-center network to four locations worldwide, with an additional 30 authorized service centers. The 23,000-sq-ft facility will house up to three Falcons. Services available at the facility include line maintenance and A checks.

A Hawker 900XP crew recently discovered after landing that a slightly out-of-tolerance closing mechanism can render the cabin door unopenable from inside the airplane, leaving the emergency hatch as the only exit. Luckily, the pilot was able to radio a lineman to grab the keys through the pilot’s side window and unlock the door handle from outside.
