SyberJet Aircraft plans to resume production of the SJ30 light twinjet in 2014 with a new glass-panel cockpit called “SyberVision,” with core avionics supplied by Honeywell. It hopes to have the new avionics certified by the end of next year, SyberJet said today at the NBAA Convention.

As pounding rain and wind exceeding 90 mph heralded the arrival of Hurricane Sandy along the Eastern seaboard earlier this week, companies and operators participating in NBAA’s Humanitarian Emergency Response Operator (Hero) database were already working with national emergency agencies and personnel to assist with post-storm relief efforts using business aircraft.

A special report released this week at the NBAA Convention by Argus analyzing the last three years of its TraqPak flight activity data found “no clear pattern, in either the upward or downward direction of total flight hours,” but found a consistent year-after-year cyclical peak in activity during the March time frame. Results also validate anecdotal evidence of a shift to the use of smaller aircraft.

The Air Charter Association of North America hosted an open forum yesterday at the NBAA Convention on the U.S. DOT’s impending notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) aimed at air charter brokers. The DOT has been developing the regulations to ensure transparency for air charter customers, but has delayed release of the NPRM. At the Acana forum, a panel of air charter experts provided an overview of what is and isn’t known about the rules that will be proposed.

Hawker Beechcraft signed orders for nine aircraft–one King Air 350i, two King Air 250s, two King Air C90GTx and four Baron G58s–worth more than $34 million today at the NBAA Convention. The orders were placed by four Beechcraft distributors in Latin America–Aerolineas in Mexico; Aviaservice in Colombia, Caribbean and Venezuela; Aviasur in Chile; and Beechcraft de Guatemala. Business aircraft financier AirFinance is providing funding for the orders. Deliveries will begin in the second quarter and conclude by the end of next year.

Cessna Aircraft brought a fuselage mockup of what it describes as the basis for a new series of light jets to the NBAA Convention this week in Orlando, Fla. The airframer is seeking customer input on the design as it begins to narrow down specifications for an eventual product launch. New this year at its NBAA booth, Cessna is also offering a virtual-reality simulation of several of its aircraft, which allows guests to immerse themselves in the cabins and instantly change various features.

This week at the NBAA Convention, Hawker Beechcraft delivered the 7,000th King Air, an aircraft line that has been in continuous production since 1964. The milestone aircraft, a King Air 350i, was delivered to Herman & Kittle Properties of Indianapolis. “The King Air is still king. We delivered the 5,000th King Air in 1996, the 6,000th in 2005 and now we’ve reached 7,000,” said Hawker Beechcraft executive vice president Shawn Vick.

Honeywell will supply Cessna with key systems for the latter’s new Latitude and Longitude jets in a deal announced this week at NBAA2012 that could be worth up to $800 million over the production life of the two aircraft. Cessna has selected Honeywell’s Laseref VI inertial navigation system, Primus HF-1050 high-frequency radios, digital cabin pressure control and monitoring system and environmental control system for both aircraft and the RE100 auxiliary power unit for the Latitude.

PPG Aerospace won a contract to supply cockpit windows for the new Eclipse 550, as well as improved-design windshield spares and side-cockpit window spares to Eclipse Aerospace for the existing Eclipse 500 fleet. The lighter-weight glass-faced acrylic windshields for both aircraft will be heated, meet requirements to resist strike by a two-pound bird at 200 knots and have an anti-static coating. The side-cockpit windows will be acrylic. PPG will start cockpit window deliveries to Eclipse in the middle of next year to coincide with deliveries of the first Eclipse 550s.
