The Embraer Legacy 500 made a “flawless” one-hour 45-minute first flight today from the aircraft manufacturer’s headquarters at Brazil’s São José dos Campos Airport, marking the beginning of the midsize jet’s flight-test program. Embraer test pilots Mozart Louzada and Eduardo Camelier, along with flight-test engineers Gustavo Paixão and Alexandre Figueiredo, flew the fly-by-wire aircraft, performing handling and performance characteristics evaluation.

Cessna Aircraft signed a contract with China Aviation Industry General Aircraft (Caiga) to form a joint-venture company to perform final assembly of Cessna Caravan turboprop singles in Shijiazhuang, China, for the Chinese market. The contract, announced today, stems from the strategic framework agreement that Cessna entered into with Caiga parent company Aviation Industry Corporation of China (Avic) in March.

Piper Aircraft named Piper Summit Aircraft China Beijing as its authorized dealer in China for sales of new Meridian turboprop singles. According to Piper Summit CEO Jack Chan, the annual growth rate for piston and turboprop aircraft operating in China is nearly 40 percent, with this fleet expected to expand from 1,700 aircraft earlier this year to about 7,700 by 2015. The new Piper dealer conducted Meridian demonstrations for potential customers as the airplane flew en route to Airshow China 2012 earlier this month in Zhuhai.
Hawthorne Global Aviation Services in New Orleans completed an extensive restoration of its terminal after Lakefront Airport suffered flooding from Hurricane Isaac in September. The $3.5 million facility opened as an FBO in February and Hawthorne acquired it only a month before the storm. Like other service providers on the field, the Hawthorne FBO was forced to relocate to a trailer while the ground floor of the building was gutted and rebuilt.
Business aircraft movements at Lagos-based Evergreen Apple Nigeria have more than doubled from a year ago to an average of 15 daily movements. Flights arriving at the African FBO are predominantly coming from Europe as business executives enter Nigeria. Arrivals from the Middle East are also increasing, it added. Driving the growth is expansion of the oil and gas energy industries, which have attracted renewed interest from European companies.
NBAA recently awarded five college students a $1,000 NBAA/UAA Janice K. Barden Aviation Scholarship, open to anyone studying aviation-related curricula at NBAA and University Aviation Association (UAA) member institutions. The 2012 recipients are Steven Santucci (Purdue University); Jonathan Sievert (University of North Dakota); Derek Stewert (Purdue University); Zachary Waller (University of North Dakota); and Maksym Wysocki (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University).
Blue Sky Network is partnering with avionics installation and aircraft retrofit company Southeast Aerospace of Melbourne, Fla. The two companies are teaming to equip both civilian and special-mission aircraft with Blue Sky’s Iridium satellite aircraft tracking systems. The fleet management solution from Blue Sky Network enables seamless command and control of multiple remotely dispersed types of mobile asset. Incorporating the Blue Sky hardware into Southeast Aerospace installations will allow more certifications for aviation applications, they said.
VistaJet announced a deal today worth up to $7.8 billion for 56 Bombardier Globals, with options for up to another 86. Deliveries of this latest batch of Bombardier jets under firm order are due to begin in January 2014 and run through the end of 2017.
