Two Avantair pilots and two passengers suffered only minor injuries when their Piaggio Avanti P.180 went off the west side of Runway 18 and flipped over while landing at Flint (Mich.) Bishop International Airport last Wednesday.

Abu Dhabi, UAE-based Al Bateen Executive Airport, the Gulf Region’s only dedicated private aviation airport, reported more than 150 business aircraft movements during the Etihad Airways Formula 1TM Grand Prix, which were held November 8 to 13. This represents an increase of 58 percent in movements compared with the same period for last year’s event.

Aerodynamics of Waterford, Mich., recently completed its second STC installation of an Aircell high-speed Internet with WLAN system in a Hawker 800XP. The installation was completed within the scheduled 2.5-week downtime and was delivered ahead of schedule, it noted.

The Naples Airport Authority reopened Runway 5/23 late last week after paving the safety areas at both ends of the airport’s primary runway. The runway was closed since July 25, but the project was completed a few days ahead of schedule and under budget, the authority said. The safety areas provide more room for aborted takeoffs and other emergencies and extends the runway’s declared takeoff distance from 5,000 to 5,800 feet.

Last week the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST) reported that worldwide rotorcraft accidents are down 30 percent since it began its campaign five years ago to cut the accident rate 80 percent by 2016. Over the last several years, the IHST has made efforts to expand its missions to more countries and developed training materials aimed at small helicopter businesses.

Reports that the FAA would begin charging for digital downloads and close the navigational products website to individuals have stirred an outcry from pilots and fostered a White House petition in opposition. But an FAA spokesman said the agency already charges for downloads, and that the site will remain open to individual users.

Teddy Forstmann, the man who was credited with turning around Gulfstream Aerospace in the 1990s, died Sunday, reportedly from brain cancer. His investment firm, Forstmann Little, acquired Gulfstream in 1990 for $800 million.

President Obama signed a $12.5 billion transportation, housing and urban development appropriations bill on Friday containing language that reinstated the Block Aircraft Registration Request (Barr) through at least Fiscal Year 2012 (Sept. 30, 2012).
