Aircraft owners and operators should start watching their mailbox for an invitation to participate in the FAA’s 2006 General Aviation and Part 135 Activity Survey. Those selected will receive a letter containing directions to participate in the Web-based annual survey, as well as their unique code to complete it.

Alternative Avionics in Waterford, Mich., has gained an STC for installation of upgraded air-data computers and pitot-static probes in the Hawker 700, a modification that the company said provides a pathway to RVSM approval while also improving autopilot functionality.

The U.S. Senate has passed a legislation package addressing many of the 9/11 Commission’s aviation security recommendations that have not yet found their way into law. Notably, the proposed rules would give the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) one year to develop a threat assessment program for general aviation airports, as well as conduct a study on the feasibility of providing grants to these airports for security upgrades.

Watch for Embraer to announce “around NBAA Convention [September] time” one or maybe two new business jets–what it is calling a “mid-light” jet and a “midsize” jet. The new aircraft are aimed at the market segment between the company’s Phenom 300, a light jet scheduled to enter service in 2009, and the super-midsize Legacy 600, of which 100 have been delivered since shipments began in 2000.

Publicly traded Macquarie Group, the Australian company that owns the Atlantic Aviation chain of FBOs, is purchasing the FBOs owned by private-equity firm Allied Capital and will merge them into the Atlantic network. Macquarie, which bought Atlantic in April 2004, is performing due diligence to purchase Allied’s 22 Mercury Air Centers, Corporate Wings, FirstAir and IX Jet Center FBOs, according to Atlantic v-p Sue Sommers.
