Clearwater, Fla.-based Piaggio Avanti fractional provider Avantair shut down yesterday and furloughed employees as it “seeks alternative financing arrangements that it hopes will enable it to resume operations as quickly and efficiently as possible,” according to an 8-K SEC filing. Employees were also notified that “the company will not be in a position to fund payroll on June 28,” meaning they will not be paid for time worked since June 8.

The FAA’s NextGen Air Transportation System initiative is progressing, according to the agency’s recently issued NextGen implementation plan report. While the report focuses on improvements to airspace and navigation capabilities, the implementation plan, and especially appendix A, provides a detailed summary of technologies already implemented or planned as part of NextGen, a useful guide for those wanting to learn about ADS-B and other systems.
An STC issued to Kollsman signals new opportunities for retrofit installation of enhanced flight vision systems (EFVS) in business jets. The FAA issued the STC on June 6 to Elbit Systems of America’s Commercial Aviation-Kollsman unit for the Kollsman EFVS on the Bombardier Challenger 604.
The International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO) program, a set of best practice standards for business aircraft operators developed in 2002, has surpassed 700 registered operators, International Business Aviation Council (IBAC) director general Kurt Edwards announced yesterday. This group of operators includes both noncommercial operators of business aircraft and air charter companies.
The Diamond Hangar FBO at London Stansted Airport is set to reopen under new ownership after the previous operator ceased trading at the facility some time around late April or early May. Diamond Hangar, a subsidiary of UK real estate group Greatex, confirmed that it has taken over the lease on the building but has yet to elaborate on what services it will provide at what is now Stansted’s fifth FBO.
Aviation alphabet groups praised today’s U.S. Senate confirmation of Anthony Foxx as the new Secretary of the Department of Transportation. He is the former mayor of Charlotte, N.C.“Now, as he leads the U.S. transportation system, we hope Foxx will adopt policies that encourage the success and growth of general aviation nationwide, allowing the industry to add to its $150 billion annual economic impact and 1.2 million jobs,” said GAMA president and CEO Pete Bunce. “We look forward to working with him in his new role.”
DayJet founder Ed Iacobucci died last Friday after a 16-month battle with pancreatic cancer. After he left Citrix Systems, the software maker that he co-founded, in the early 2000s, Iacobucci started laying the groundwork for per-seat, on-demand charter operator DayJet and placed an order for 239 Eclipse 500s in May 2005. DayJet started operations in October 2007 but ceased flying 11 months later.
Nextant Aerospace appointed FortAero Baltic Business Aviation Alliance as the exclusive sales agent for the Nextant 400XTi in Russia and the CIS. The company has placed an initial order for two 400XTis worth $11.4 million. FortAero, which has offices in Tallinn and Moscow, has more than 16 years of experience with the Russian and CIS business aviation market and will play a “key role” in defining Nextant’s sales, marketing and customer service strategy in the region. To date, Nextant has delivered 28 of its 400XTs to customers around the world.
Avcon is “nearing completion” of its STC project for a Learjet 20-series Stage 3 noise suppression device. Under the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, aircraft that do not meet Stage 3 noise level requirements–a category that includes unmodified 20-series Learjets–cannot be operated in the U.S. after Dec. 31, 2015. Installation of the Avcon noise suppressor on 20-series Learjets should allow continued use of the CJ610 turbojet-powered airplanes beyond that date, the company said. Installations of the STC’d suppressors are expected to begin in the fall.
Certification testing is under way on the first Passport development engine at GE Aviation’s test facility in Peebles, Ohio. The engine, which will power the Bombardier Global 7000 and 8000, began ground testing on Monday and ran for more than three hours, reaching more than 18,000 pounds of thrust. This first full engine test launches a certification program that will include more than 4,000 ground hours and 8,000 cycles of testing. Certification is expected in 2015. Flight-testing on GE’s flying testbed is scheduled to begin next year.
