The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) officially closed its public comment period regarding the proposal to remove from public sale and distribution its Flight Information Publications (FLIP), Digital Aeronautical Flight Information File (DAFIF) and related aeronautical safety-of-navigation digital and hardcopy publications.

The National Transportation Safety Board last week issued its final report on a February 21 accident at Ft. Lauderdale Executive Airport in which a Learjet 55, landing in extreme adverse weather conditions, ran off the end of the runway. Witnesses said that seconds after landing, the aircraft encountered “a wall of water” produced by a severe microburst.

Czech aircraft designer and manufacturer Evektor-Aerotechnik, best known for a line of light piston singles, will begin promotion of its new EV-55 twin turboprop at the EAA AirVenture fly-in at Oshkosh, Wis., later this month. The unpressurized aircraft, partly financed by the Czech government, is priced at $1.7 million and is expected to sell as an alternative to turboprop singles such as the Cessna Caravan.

Following a hard look at the recent series of air charter accidents, the National Air Transportation Association has taken steps to assist operators in improving safety. NATA president James Coyne unveiled the association's new “Safety 1st” air charter Safety Management System (SMS) in a town hall meeting yesterday with some 50 aviation businesses at Teterboro Airport.
