A recently completed audit by the Transportation Department’s inspector general has found that the FAA’s Civil Aviation Registry does not provide all of the information needed for aviation safety and security measures. According to the DOT IG, the FAA lacks the information it needs on the identity of non-citizen aircraft owners and has incomplete information on pilot certifications.

Second-quarter 2013 earnings are likely to bring few signs of recovery for aviation, according to the July Business Jet Monthly report from analyst J.P.Morgan, which highlighted several manufacturers.
The report predicts that demand for smaller Cessna Citations will remain depressed but “We will look for more color on the Sovereign and XLS, key midsize offerings.”
The EASA has approved the interim solution Eurocopter devised to address concerns about main-gearbox lubrication on the EC225 after two controlled ditchings last year.
The manufacturer is using vibration monitoring, inspections and part modification to prevent the possibility of an undetected crack leading to in-flight rupture of the bevel gear vertical shaft–a part that is critical to main gearbox lubrication.
The FAA has issued a final rule that raises minimum flight hours required by first officers for U.S. air carriers flying under Part 121 regulations to 1,500, from the current 250.

Flight training provider FlightSafety International will manufacture the first interchangeable full-flight simulator for the Beechcraft King Air 350 and B200 turboprops. Expected to enter service next year at the company’s learning center in Wichita, the Garmin G1000-based simulator will include synthetic vision, Chartview with Jeppesen charts, Taws, electronic stability and protection, operational weather radar traffic advisory system and datalink weather through XM Satellite.
Embraer recently delivered its 400th Phenom-series twinjet since the debut of the Phenom 100 in 2008. The delivery of the milestone Phenom 300 to a German firm took place at the airframer’s headquarters in São José dos Campos, Brazil. “Delivery of the Phenom 300 to The Hansgrohe Group means we will have nearly 60 Phenoms in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, further [expanding] our presence in these important markets,” said Colin Stevens, Embraer Executive Jets vice president of sales for EMEA.
The first of VistaJet’s 50 Bombardier Global 5000s and 6000s ordered last November has been enrolled in the JSSI program. The long-term $205 million deal, announced at EBACE, will cover the Global 5000s’ and 6000s’ Rolls-Royce BR710 engines and Honeywell APUs under JSSI’s hourly-cost maintenance program.
The European Business Aviation Association has protested proposed new European Commission guidelines restricting state aid for airports. The rules would seek to phase out all public support for airports over a 10-year period and would introduce a sliding scale that limits permitted aid to airports with fewer than five million passengers per year and bans it for facilities with more than that throughput.
The NTSB is investigating what caused the fatal crash of a de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter floatplane shortly after takeoff on Sunday from Soldotna Airport in Alaska. Parts of the wreckage of the Rediske Air aircraft, including the engine and propeller, have been recovered, and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The accident, Alaska’s worst in more than a decade, killed all 10 people on board, including the pilot/air-taxi company co-owner.
