Anglo-Italian helicopter manufacturer AgustaWestland signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday with Brazilian aircraft company Embraer to establish a joint venture to manufacture AgustaWestland helicopters in Brazil for both the domestic and regional military and civilian markets.

Business aircraft flight activity was “generally flat” last year, rising 0.3 percent compared with 2011, according to a TraqPak special report released yesterday by aviation services company Argus. The report indicates that business aircraft flying did increase in the first half of last year, but fell in the latter six months. Traffic climbed 1.2 percent and 0.6 percent in the first and second quarters, respectively, but slid 0.1 percent and 0.5 percent in the last two quarters, respectively.
Rockwell Collins introduced enhancements to its Flight Manager web-based application today at the NBAA Schedulers & Dispatchers Conference in San Antonio, Texas. The changes to the program, which is part of the Iowa-based company’s Ascend flight information solutions, include dynamic graphical flight tracking and an electronic advance passenger information system (APIS) reporting tool for Part 91 operators.
Less than two months after two possible weather-related fatal crashes of EMS helicopters in Illinois and Iowa, the FAA has issued a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin covering recommendations for rotorcraft flying into snowy or icy conditions. The SAIB describes procedures to reduce the probability of an uncommanded in-flight engine shutdown due to snow and/or ice ingestion and reminds operators that most helicopters are neither equipped nor approved for flight into icing conditions.
Eclipse Aerospace has revealed more details of its $2.695 million Eclipse 550 twinjet to AIN. CEO Mason Holland said that, while the 550 will continue to use the same airframe and engines as the EA500, there will be several cockpit, cabin and system changes.
Dubai-based Jetex Flight Support will open a new flight-planning lounge in the Oxfordjet FBO at London Oxford Airport in about three weeks, the company announced today. In conjunction, Jetex also becomes Oxfordjet’s preferred flight-planning partner. Jetex is making over one of the FBO’s crew lounges, as the “Jetex Lounge,” with new furnishings, signage, aeronautical charts and world time-zone clocks. Computers in this lounge will link directly to Jetex’s flight-planning systems, while also hosting generic flight-planning software.
Dassault Falcon awarded its two training partners, CAE and FlightSafety International, certificates demonstrating full compliance with requirements of the new Falcon training policy manual (FTPM) late last week. The certificates, which are valid for two years, cover training of pilots, maintenance personnel and cabin crew. Individual aircraft approvals will be issued throughout the year, Dassault said.
New Orleans Lakefront Airport is requiring reservations for aircraft operators flying into the airport from February 1 to 4 due to the Super Bowl XLVII on February 3. “A heavy volume of air traffic is expected during this time, so a parking reservation system has been established to ensure that ramp space will be available for arriving aircraft,” notes an advisory from New Orleans Lakefront Airport.
Bombardier Aerospace received full certification for its Global 6000 today from the Agencia Nacional de Aviacao Civil in Brazil. The Global 6000 is an updated version of the Global Express XRS that includes Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics and an enhanced-vision system. With this approval, Bombardier’s full line of Learjet, Challenger and Global jets now has Brazilian certification.
Uvalde, Texas-based Sierra Industries delivered its 50th Cessna Citation with the Williams International FJ44-2A engine retrofit last week. This milestone Citation was handed over to customer Dr. Howard Tobin, a director of the Citation Jet Pilots Association. Including the company’s previous Eagle 400 modifications and FJ44-3A upgrades for Citation IIs and S/IIs, Sierra has performed engine retrofits on more than 70 Citations.
