NBAA and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) are closely watching developments at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Montreal involving the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS). On Tuesday, GAMA president and CEO Pete Bunce said at the organization’s yearly press briefing that both associations are also working closely with the International Business Aviation Council on this matter.

Garmin unveiled its first radar altimeter–the GRA 5500–yesterday. An all-digital design that employs digital signal processing technology, the GRA 5500 already holds FAA TSO authorization and is available immediately, at a retail price of $13,995 (without antenna).
Several OEMs have already selected the GRA 5500 for upcoming aircraft, including new versions of the Cessna Citation X, Sovereign, Latitude and Longitude and Bell Helicopter’s 525 Relentless.
Aircraft charter broker Sentient Jet reported 15-percent year-over-year growth in new clients, which now exceed 4,000, and the sale of more than 1,200 twenty-five-hour jet cards during 2012. Last year, charter legs flown by Sentient customers made gains on 2011, and compound annual growth averaged more than 5 percent since 2010, the company reported.
“LABACE 2013 will take place once again at Congonhas Airport [in São Paulo, Brazil], on the announced dates of August 14, 15 and 16,” Ricardo Nogueira, executive director of organizer ABAG, told AIN late last week, just before Carnaval began in Brazil. “Infraero, which manages the airport, gave the green light” just last Wednesday, he said. Concerns about possible contamination from fuel tanks abandoned by bankrupt airline VASP prompted extensive testing and the delay.
Bristow officials are confident an “interim way to safely fly” Eurocopter EC225s will be found late this spring or early this summer. In a recent fiscal third-quarter earnings conference call, top executives at the helicopter operator said such an interim fix could be tighter oversight of Hums parameters, thus confirming what Eurocopter’s CEO hinted late last month. A shaft redesign, if needed, would take about a year-and-a-half, Bristow officials estimate.
Edward Burns, 93, the president of Beech Aircraft from 1981 to 1982 and a 40-year employee at the company, died Friday. Burns, also the nephew of company co-founders Walter and Olive Ann Beech, was the fourth president at the Wichita-based aircraft manufacturer, succeeding Frank Hedrick. Burns retired in 1982, reportedly after clashing with executives at Raytheon, which acquired Beechcraft that year.
Jet Aviation Dubai has opened an FBO at Dubai World Central’s Al Maktoum International Airport. The company was granted permission to operate an FBO at the field permanently following its appointment as the dedicated ground handling service provider for MEBA 2012 in December, which was held for the first time at Al Maktoum Airport.
Aircraft detailing firm The Allen Groupe reappointed company founder David Allen as its CEO today. “He returns to this role after a brief time away to successfully address health issues,” the Orlando, Fla.-based company said. The Allen Groupe provides aircraft cleaning, luxury amenity stocking, de-icing and facilities maintenance services in the U.S. and Europe at more than 30 locations. It also provides these services for static display aircraft at business aircraft conventions and international airshows.
Daher-Socata delivered 38 TBM 850s last year, representing the fourth best year for the company’s TBM aircraft line since 1990. The 2012 deliveries bring the number of TBMs–including the 700, 800 and 850 models–to 622 aircraft, of which 298 are TBM 850s. Citing the GAMA year-end shipment and billings figures released on Tuesday, Daher-Socata said the TBM 850 had an 18-percent share of its market segment.
The EASA has approved Eurocopter’s fix for the tail-rotor problems that have affected the AS350B3e AStar/Ecureuil light single helicopter. Operators will have to perform the modification–essentially removing an additional chin weight and installing a load compensator–within five months, per a recently issued AD. It will “restore the tail rotor dynamic load level,” down to the level found on previous models, such as the B3.
