When it issued Eclipse 500 Airworthiness Directive 2008-24-07, which becomes effective today, the FAA asked for comments from operators. The AD limits the Eclipse 500 to a maximum pressure altitude of 37,000 feet due to “several incidents of engine surge” of the jet’s Pratt & Whitney Canada PW610F-A engines. The surge is due to carbon buildup on the static vane during high bleed flow conditions.

Duluth, Minn.-based Cirrus Design yesterday said it continues to refine the design of its SJ50 Vision single-engine jet and released more detailed preliminary performance and specifications numbers.
According to a UBS Investment Research report issued yesterday, the business jet market “is deteriorating at an accelerating rate” as pre-owned inventory continued to rise, flight activity fell and sales slowed last month. Worse yet, business jet financing appears to be drying up, threatening backlogs.
Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and local leaders joined Embraer executives this morning to break ground on the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer’s $50 million Phenom 100/300 assembly and completions facility at Melbourne International Airport. “Today’s groundbreaking celebrates a milestone for Embraer by launching its first U.S. assembly plant devoted to the executive jet business,” noted Embraer president and CEO Frederico Curado.
Rodney Hamilton, the director and chief pilot of Ford’s now-defunct flight department, summed up the state of the industry yesterday in two words: “difficult times.” In the past week, General Motors and Ford Motor Company announced they were shutting their respective flight departments, and investors learned that Citigroup has put two of its jets–worth $30 million each–on the block.
