AgustaWestland’s next-generation AW189 prototype made its first flight ahead of schedule yesterday at the Finmeccanica company’s plant in Cascina Costa, Italy. With chief test pilot Giuseppe Lo Coco at the controls, “it performed as expected” during a 45-minute sortie that also included an assessment of the helicopter’s general handling and basic systems.

The long-awaited final rule on aircraft repair station security will not be published until the fourth quarter of 2012, according to the Transportation Security Administration. Twenty industry leaders sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano asking that the rule, which has been under consideration for eight years, be finalized before the end of 2011.

Yesterday the FAA announced a final rule on pilot flight duty and rest requirements, a stricter regulation stemming from the Feb. 12, 2009 crash of Colgan Air Flight 3407 near Buffalo. The rule amends existing work conditions for flight crew operating under Part 121 but exempts all-cargo carriers.

As the investigation continues into Tuesday’s fatal crash of a Daher-Socata TBM700 in New Jersey, more details of the flight’s final moments are emerging. According to the NTSB, the pilot reported that he was “picking up ice” just before the single-engine turboprop crashed into the treed median of I-287 near Morristown, killing all five on board.
