Following a “tepid” first quarter, business aviation flying made a strong comeback in the second quarter, according to business aircraft hourly-cost maintenance provider JSSI. The company’s business aviation index for the second quarter shows that global business aviation flight activity ramped up by 8 percent quarter-over-quarter and 3 percent from a year ago.

Pilatus Aircraft has signed a 10-year agreement with Tata Aircraft Systems Ltd. (TASL) for assembly of PC-12 aerostructures at TASL’s facility in Hyderabad, India. Under the deal, TASL will deliver the first complete PC-12 NG structure in the second half of 2016. The project includes tooling, jigs and training of TASL’s personnel at Pilatus facilities in Switzerland.
Second-quarter business jet deliveries climbed by 30 percent in North America, but this gain was more than offset by deficits in the rest of the world, according to data released yesterday by UBS Global Research. Global business jet shipments, excluding very light jets, fell 1 percent during the quarter, dragged down by losses in other world regions: -50 percent in Asia-Pacific outside China/India, -39 percent in China/India, -23 percent in Western Europe and -21 percent in emerging countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
The Melbourne (Fla.) Airport Authority is expected to approve Embraer Executive Aircraft’s plans for a Legacy 450/500 assembly facility during a special meeting tomorrow morning. Embraer has proposed constructing a $76 million, 250,000-sq-ft building that would be situated between its business jet delivery center and Phenom 100/300 assembly facility on the north side of Melbourne International Airport.
An EASA rule that takes effect in October opens the door to offshore oil-and-gas helicopter passengers’ using personal electronic devices (PED), but operators seem unlikely to go ahead with the much-desired change. The Annex 4 of Part-CAT grants exceptions to the general principle–no PED use in flight–and makes it clear that implementation is at the discretion of the operator. A company can thus allow the use of PEDs during all phases of flight, though transmitting PEDs such as cellphones are not allowed to be used during taxi, takeoff and landing.

The second annual African Business Aviation Association (AfBAA) Symposium is set to take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, on September 14 and 15. It promises to build on the strong foundations laid at the inaugural event in Marrakech last year that encouraged African business aviation stakeholders to continue to invest in the sector, maximize economic growth and participate in events that help to develop the industry on the continent.
The Middle East Business Aviation Association (MEBAA) will host its next MEBAA Conference in Amman, Jordan, on October 14. Initial plans called for it to be held in Tunisia next month, MEBAA said, but this venue has been postponed until next year. Following the success of the last MEBAA Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in April, the event in Jordan will also draw upon members and prominent stakeholders across the region’s aviation sector “to deliberate and discuss the issues pertaining to the Middle East and North Africa’s business aviation market.”
Jet Aviation St. Louis received an STC to install the Satcom Direct Router (SDR) in the Bombardier Global Express, XRS, 5000 and 6000. The SDR allows users to manage all cabin communications systems with simultaneous use of Inmarsat Swift 64, SwiftBroadband, Ku-Band and Ka-Band satellite connections with intelligent traffic control, according to Satcom Direct. It is compatible with most Wi-Fi access points and supports up to four wireless networks.
FlightSafety International is offering online training for the ground school portion of its Gulfstream G550 recurrent pilot training course. The company’s G550 eRecurrent training course is available for pilots who operate their aircraft under FAA or EASA regulations and replaces the two-day, in-person recurrent training course. It includes a 13-hour ground school eLearning module and instructor-lead LiveLearning CRM training. The simulator sessions, systems integration training and written exam portions of the course still must take place at a FlightSafety learning center.
