Just five months after celebrating the delivery of its first new-build Eclipse 550 light jet, Eclipse Aerospace laid off a “substantial” number of employees at its Albuquerque, N.M. headquarters and facilities in Chicago and Charleston, S.C., citing slow sales for its very light jet.

Business jet demand has not recovered in line with corporate profits as it has in the past. J.P. Morgan aerospace analyst Joseph Nadol III attributes the sluggishness to “the stigma attached to bizjets during the recent recession and a focus on cost cutting among corporate customers. We estimate that 2013 U.S. corporate profits were up about 50 percent from the 2008 trough, whereas bizjet deliveries have yet to turn up decisively.”

Europe has delayed the mandate for ADS-B out equipage in its airspace. The earliest ADS-B out requirement in Europe was Jan. 8, 2015, for new aircraft, with retrofit installations due Dec. 7, 2017. The new dates are June 8, 2016, for new aircraft and June 7, 2020, for retrofit.

Signature Flight Support added three new FBOs to its network on Friday with acquisition of the FBO 2000 chain and its three Caribbean locations. The purchase includes facilities at V.C. Bird Antigua International Airport, R. Bradshaw International Airport in St. Kitts and Vance W. Amory International Airport in Nevis.

The FAA has essentially shut down flight-sharing systems that attempted to match pilots with passengers who wished to fly to the same destination. One such company, AirPooler, sought an FAA interpretation to ensure that its business model didn’t violate the regulations.

As Congress prepares to work on Fiscal Year 2015 transportation funding and FAA reauthorization legislation, aviation stakeholders are expressing “renewed concerns” about the preservation of 252 federal contract towers, NBAA said. Fifty-five senators recently signed a letter asking FAA Administrator Michael Huerta to consider “all perspectives” in the effort to streamline tower operations as the FAA continues to deal with budget pressures.

Air charter broker Sentient Jet is seeing a “resurgence” in both business and leisure travel, the company announced today. In the first five months of this year, corporate travel (Monday through Wednesday) increased 10 percent year-over-year, while leisure travel (Friday through Sunday) jumped 17 percent, according to the company. For the upcoming Labor Day weekend, private jet bookings are up 37 percent over last year and 289 percent above 2012, it noted.

Avfuel expanded its branded FBO network with the addition of Apex Aviation at Vernal (Utah) Regional Airport and Wells Aircraft at Hutchinson (Kan.) Municipal Airport. Under the arrangement, both FBOs will have access to Avfuel’s training and operational systems and will offer Avfuel Contract Fuel and Avtrip loyalty rewards. Apex Aviation recently opened its new FBO facility and offers 24/7 service. Located in the middle of the U.S., Wells Aircraft is “ideal” for tech stops, Avfuel said.

Ruag Aviation is now offering real wood flooring as an option for business aircraft cabins. As a replacement for carpet, the wood flooring adds no weight to the aircraft and is about one-third of an inch thick, Ruag said. It is available as veneer and can be laid in different patterns in an aircraft’s entry, shower, lavatory and/or main cabin. The flooring has a “natural” satin finish and is compatible with diverse floor layouts through the use of rectangular or single curved panels. It can also be personalized with inlays, as well as marquetry and even lighting.
