Beechcraft appointed Cutter Aviation in Phoenix and Flying Colours Corp. in Peterborough, Ontario, as authorized service centers for the King Air, Baron and Bonanza product lines, the Wichita-based aircraft manufacturer announced today at the Sun ’n Fun Fly-In and Expo in Lakeland, Fla.
Epic Aircraft (Booth No. SNF-003) plans to gain FAA certification for its Epic LT turboprop single late next year, the Bend, Ore.-based company told AIN at the Sun ’n Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Fla. It has already fielded 40 owner-flown versions of the 325-knot airplane, with S/N 49 now on the production line.
The company is now using a demonstrator for initial flight testing and will soon start building two conforming prototypes that it will use for FAA certification efforts. Both prototypes are expected to be flying by year-end, according to company president Doug King.
Three regional Diamond aircraft dealers in the Eastern U.S. launched a DA 40 XLS/XLT shared-ownership program today at the Sun ’n Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Fla. Dubbed DiamondShare, the program offsets the cost of aircraft ownership by providing two or three “members” who pay a fixed monthly fee to the aircraft owner for access to the airplane. The participating dealers are Great Lakes Diamond Aircraft Sales, Premier Aircraft Sales and Dominion Aircraft Sales.

Viking Aircraft Engines of Edgewater, Fla. (Booth N-068), is displaying its Viking 110 on display at Sun ’n Fun 2013, and was offering Firewall Forward kitting for the Van’s Aircraft RV-12. The 110-hp (at 5800 rpm, with 2.33:1 gear reduction turning the prop at 2500 rpm) dedicated aircraft engine is based on the Honda 1.5-liter engine. This liquid-cooled powerplant includes electronic ignition and multi-port fuel injection. It weighs 178 pounds, dry, and can burn 92 octane mogas (up to 10 percent ethanol) or 100LL.

Developed in a partnership among ForeFlight, Appareo Systems and Sporty’s Pilot Shop, the original $799 Stratus receiver, now dubbed Stratus 1, will now display ADS-R and TIS-B traffic on the ForeFlight Mobile iPad app (with the late April release of ForeFlight version 5.1).
At Sun ’n Fun 2013 Continental Motors (Booth D-097) announced that it has increased TBO up to 400 hours on its Gold Standard factory-produced engines, which it introduced in 2012. The increased TBO is for nearly all Continental Motors factory-produced engines as designated by Serial Number 1006000 and higher. These engines were produced in February 2012 and beyond. Aircraft owners who operate their engines more than 40 hours per month stand to benefit the most from the TBO extension, allowing them to postpone their TBO time by up to 400 hours.
Sales of TBM 850 turboprop singles were steady last year, Daher-Socata senior vice president and Socata North America president Nicholas Chabbert said today at the Sun ’n Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Fla. “Our backlog is now much stronger than it was at this time last year, and we expected the 500th TBM 700/850 to enter service in North America by early next year,” he added. There are 461 TBM 700s and 850s currently operating in this region.

The Beechcraft King Air turboprop fleet has surpassed 60 million flight hours, the Wichita-based aircraft manufacturer announced today at the Sun ’n Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Fla. More than 7,000 King Airs are in operation in 127 countries, including all branches of the U.S. military.
