President Obama outlined ambitious new goals for U.S. deficit reduction, including a call for growth in security spending to be held below inflation over the next 12 years. This amounts to a $400 billion cut over current plans. Fiscal hardliners have called for even greater cuts in defense spending–up to $1 trillion. While the Congress would probably not implement such drastic surgery, the outlook for defense spending in the U.S.

Sikorsky has won the $3.5 billion Turkish Utility Helicopter Program (TUHP), with a version of the Black Hawk designated T-70. Detailed negotiations for assembly of an initial 109 T-70s by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) will now begin. TAI will produce some parts for the T-70s, while local company Alp Aviation, which is 50-percent owned by Sikorsky, will produce dynamic components.
Bell Helicopter made the first flight of its OH-58 Block II demonstrator at its Xworx research and development facility in Fort Worth on April 14.
Alenia Aermacchi flew the first production M-346 on March 31. It is the first of 15 aircraft ordered by the Italian Air Force, which has designated the new jet trainer T-346A.
