The ongoing impasse in Washington over the Fiscal Year 2011 U.S. federal budget means that the Pentagon can spend only at 2010 budget levels and cannot start new programs. Meanwhile, it has submitted a budget request of $553 billion for 2012, compared with $548 billion requested for 2011. But the mood in Congress has swung in favor of serious efforts to cut deficit spending. The years of burgeoning defense budgets in the U.S.

Thales UK announced that its lightweight multirole missile (LMM) has been confirmed for maritime strikes by the UK Lynx Wildcat helicopter. The launch order is for 1,000 missiles with guidance by laser-beam rider to meet the UK’s future anti-surface guided weapon (Light) requirement.

Airbus Military delivered the first C295 equipped for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) to Chile.

The twin-engine, medium transport aircraft is equipped with search radar, digital avionics, magnetic anomaly detector, underwing hardpoints for sonobuoys or torpedos and an acoustic processor. The mission system is Airbus Military’s own fully integrated tactical system, with positions for four tactical operators.
