The U.S. Air Force F-15 display here is so hot you can see the paint peeling off the aircraft! In fact, although this F-15E Strike Eagle needs sprucing up a tad, its airshow act could hardly be smarter. The display put on by captains Phil “Ritz” Smith (pilot) accompanied by John “Gizmo” Cox in the back seat, is the best that AIN has seen of an F-15.

Making its first-ever appearance in the Middle East, the U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor is flying over each day from Al Dhafra airbase, Abu Dhabi, for its 14-minute display slot. Major Dave “Zeke” Skalicky is showing off America’s top-of-the-line stealth fighter with a serious of gravity-defying maneuvers.
Selex Galileo, which produces the Falco tactical UAV, has recently integrated multiple reconnaissance sensors on the vehicle. With an mtow of only 1,078 pounds, the Falco may be the smallest UAV to carry both video and radar sensors. The Anglo-Italian company manufactures the sensors and the ground control system, as well as the air vehicle and its avionics.
In late July the U.S. Air Force’s Air Combat Command issued a request for information for what it calls the light attack/armed reconnaissance (LAAR) aircraft. The RFI covers the potential procurement of 100 OA-X aircraft optimized for irregular warfare missions, which could see the U.S. Air Force back in the business
Lockheed Martin is showing off its Airborne Multi-intelligence Laboratory (AML) here at the Dubai Airshow as part of its campaign to offer the aircraft’s unique talents to a variety of users, both in the U.S. and overseas. In August, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued the OEM an experimental airworthiness certificate for its AML, based on a Gulfstream III business jet.
According to Airbus Military officials, the A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) has won all the recent competitions for a large aerial tanker because of its superior airframe, coupled to a unique, high-technology refueling system. “We’re very proud of our in-house boom,” said Peter Scoffham, vice president for defense capability marketing.
Alenia Aermacchi is reorganizing the layout of its Venegono plant in Italy in preparation for the start of serial production of its M-346 lead-in fighter trainer. Its contract with the Italian government for six aircraft and simulation equipment (nine more aircraft are to follow) is technically ready and awaits signatures by all the ministries involved.
Four Dornier 228s operated by the German Navy’s Marineflieger-geschwader 3 “Graf Zeppelin” on pollution-control and surveillance missions are being upgraded with new glass cockpits and composite propellers by Ruag Aerospace. The German Office of Defense Technology and Procurement signed the contract for the upgrade program in early August.
Boeing is due to fly the first P-8A maritime patrol aircraft equipped with a mission system early next year as the program to replace the U.S. Navy’s aging fleet of P-3 maritime patrol aircraft moves into the flight-test phase. The Navy plans to buy 117 P-8As, derived from the 737-800 airliner, with an initial operating capability in 2013. Meanwhile, India is the first export customer, with eight aircraft on order.
Last month Saab announced a partnership with Ultra Electronics’ UK-based Communication and Integrated Systems division covering the joint exploration and exploitation of the market for vertical takeoff and land unmanned aerial vehicle systems (VTUAS). Earlier, in May, Saab announced another partnership with Swiss UAV, which added the Neo and Koax vehicles to create a VTUAS family along with the Saab-developed Skeldar.
