GippsAero (Hall 1 Stand D2) is currently flight-testing its new $1.3 million GA10 turboprop single and anticipates certification by May 2013. Because so much of the GA10 is based on the current GA8 piston-powered Airvan, the Australian company’s marketing manager Mark McNamara expects an expeditious certification program using one or two aircraft. “We’re excited to have the aircraft flying and headed toward certification,” he said.

Aurora Flight Sciences is displaying its Diamond DA42 optionally piloted aircraft (OPA) on the Diamond Aircraft stand here (OE18). The low-cost intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) solution is compatible with NATO standards, and “combines the best of manned and unmanned surveillance aircraft capabilities,” said U.S.-based Aurora.
Called the Centaur, the OPA can be self-deployed, as its ground control equipment fits in the aircraft’s cargo compartment. Conversion from manned to unmanned-configuration takes two crewmembers less than four hours.

The GippsAero GA10 turboprop single flew last month from the company’s base at Latrobe Regional Airport in Victoria, Australia. The 10-seat airplane circled the airport several times for approximately 20 minutes and performed a low approach before coming in to land, according to GippsAero. Australian certification of the Rolls-Royce 250-powered aircraft is expected in the first half of next year, with deliveries planned to start by mid-2013. GippsAero said it will soon to announce details of a deposit program that will allow customers to secure a purchase position.
A Pilatus PC-12NG with special Formula 1 livery showing the Sauber C31 race car, will fly the Sauber F1 Team direct to the racetracks of Europe in 2012. On its first mission last weekend, it flew the eight-man team, plus team manager Peter Sauber, to the first race in Spain landing in Sabadell, a small aerodrome with a 3,300ft runway, close to the Barcelona circuit.
Europe remains solid for business aviation and will remain a high priority for Cessna, according to the company’s president and CEO Scott Ernest. This vote of confidence in an apparently ailing market will likely be endorsed here at EBACE today with Cessna expected to make an announcement “about a new product.”
The Diamond DA52 twin diesel made its first flight on Tuesday afternoon from the company’s headquarters in Neustadt, Germany. Diamond Aircraft chairman Christian Dries and head of flight-test Ingmar Mayerbuch were at the controls of the Austro Engine AE300E-powered airplane. No abnormalities were reported during the one-hour test flight. Diamond has not yet released a timetable for certification or production of the new seven-seat twin.
The annual Sun ’n’ Fun light aircraft convention opened today in Lakeland, Fla., with product-enhancement announcements from several exhibitors. Cessna will add optional flight into known icing (FIKI) capability to its Corvalis TTX high-performance piston single through an integrated wet system molded into the aircraft’s composite wings.
Flight Training Adelaide, which trains cadets for airlines such as Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, Qantas, QantasLink, JAL Express and J-Air, has ordered eight firm and 18 optional Diamond DA40 light single-engine aircraft for its Parafield, Australia base. The contract was signed with Diamond Aircraft in conjunction with Australian distributor Hawker Pacific, which will provide after-sales support.
After a year-long flight test program powering the Thrush 510G agricultural airplane, GE Aviation received type certification from the EASA last month for its M601H-80 turboprop powerplant, an upgrade of the M601 engine the company inherited in 2008 when it purchased Czech-Republic-based Walter Engines. This marks the first occasion where a GE engine received its initial certification from the European agency.
