EADS flew the first aircraft powered solely by algae-based biofuel today at the ILA Airshow in Berlin as part of the daily flying display. The Austrian-built Diamond Aircraft DA-42 NG’s two Austro Engine AE300 diesels required only minor adjustment to burn the biofuel, which is supplied by German processor VTS from algae oil provided by Biocombustibles del Chibut in Argentina.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a pre-publication version of an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANRPM) on lead in avgas. The ANPRM signals the agency’s intent to investigate lead emissions from general aviation aircraft further under the regulatory processes of the Clean Air Act. This ANPRM is a first step in a process that might lead eventually to regulations concerning the use of lead as an additive in avgas.
Phillips 66 Aviation is offering a $1-per-gallon rebate to qualifying pilots flying Angel Flight Northeast and Mercy Medical Airlift missions, when fuel is purchased using the Phillips 66 aviation credit card at Phillips 66-branded FBOs.
Chevron Global Aviation, which operates five oil refineries, “will withdraw from marketing Chevron- and Texaco-branded aviation fuels in 27 states [approximately 200 locations],” the company said in a statement issued last week.
On May 1, Chevron fuel distributor Hiller Group finalized its purchase of Air Petro, a Chevron-branded distributor in the western U.S. Hiller Group’s distribution network is in the eastern U.S., and the acquisition boosts the company’s network to nearly 600 dealers across the country. Lehigh Valley Aviation Services, based at Lehigh Valley International Airport in Allentown, Pa., has renewed its branding agreement with Avfuel. UVflightplanner.com, Universal Weather and Aviation’s flight planning system for business aviation, now has integrated fuel tankering calculations, which the company claims is an industry first. The new system, which goes live this week, allows operators to quickly decide when and how they should fill tanks with fuel during a trip.
Recent years have seen growing business aircraft traffic to Eastern Europe and farther east into the Balkan and Caucasian states. In a bid to bolster the market for alternative fuels, two of the world's largest consumers of jet-A have formed a strategic alliance: the U.S. Air Transport Association and the U.S. Department of Defense. According to ATA president James May, environmental considerations and rising prices for petroleum-based fuel motivated the agreement signed last month.
