An Alpha Systems angle-of-attack (AOA) system customized for the Mitsubishi MU-2 has received FAA approval and is available for installation on all of the Japanese-built turboprop twins. The AOA kit costs $6,350, plus installation, and is available from the MU-2 Parts Center in Addison, Texas. The AOA indicator mounts above the glareshield and includes an audio warning for high AOA. Alpha Systems' AOA is calibrated for approach and landing at all MU-2 flap settings.
“As an aeronautical engineer and former naval aviator, I learned early that an AOA system offers an optimum way to maintain a safe margin above stall,” said Rick Wheldon, vice president of Turbine Aircraft Services, which provides product support for the MU-2 series under contract to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America. “According to the NTSB, loss of control remains a major cause of aircraft accidents. Widespread use of an AOA indicator of this quality and capability would, without doubt, result in a significant reduction in those types of accidents for the MU-2 or any other similar-category aircraft.”
