Brazil’s Embraer announced several “product enhancements” to its midsize Legacy 500 and “mid-light” Legacy 450 business jets at last week’s NBAA 2013 Convention in Las Vegas.
With the first prototype of the Legacy 450 due to fly by year-end, the manufacturer revealed that it has extended the fuselage of the jet by more than half a foot to provide six additional inches of cabin length. Embraer has also increased the range specification of the Legacy 450 from 2,300 to 2,500 nm with four passengers by increasing the aircraft’s full-fuel capacity.
Drake Group, an engineering services provider, recently received STC approval for deploying parachutists and cargo under parachute from a Gulfstream GV/G550. In addition to single and tandem sport parachuting, the STC allows the delivery of emergency medical supplies, survival equipment and specialized critical replacement components by static line at great distances from the aircraft departure point. The STC, a multiple certificate applicable to any GV or G550, requires no changes to the aircraft and consists of copyrighted AFM supplements.
First-time NBAA exhibitor Specialty Bulb Co. (Booth No. C12639) is small compared to most of its neighbors on the convention center floor, but its size belies its significance. While the Bohemia, N.Y. company, located across the street from MacArthur Airport on Long Island, has only 12 employees and just sells one product, lighting, it does this for everything from Cessna 152s to Airbus A320s and Boeing 747s, to a diverse range of customers from weekend pilots to major airlines.
ACEA (Beijing) Aviation Investment, the Piaggio Avanti distributor in Mainland China, signed a contract yesterday at NBAA 2013 with SR Jet, a division of Beijing-based Sparkle Roll Investment Holdings, for the purchase of two extended-range Avanti IIs with options for eight more. The aircraft will incorporate an additional tank with a 400-pound capacity, increasing the maximum fuel on board to 3,226 pounds from 2,826 and extending the maximum range by 250 nm, to 1,720 nm with IFR reserves.
Fractional jet share and charter companies from NetJets to JetSuite to Executive AirShare are choosing to stack their fleets with Cessna Citation jets, large and small, according to Brad Thress, senior vice-president of business jets for Cessna Aircraft Company (Booth No. C8843).
NetJets, the largest Citation Jet operator in the world with 50 Citation Xs in its fleet, is perhaps one of the clearest examples, Thress pointed out. NetJets has 25 Cessna Citation Latitudes on order and options for 125 more, all of which will begin deliveries in 2016.

Gulfstream Aerospace’s deliveries of completed aircraft more than doubled to 38 (32 large-cabin and six midsize jets) in the third quarter versus 17 large-cabin jets in the same period a year ago, parent company General Dynamics said during its quarterly investor conference call yesterday morning. In the first nine months, Gulfstream (Booth No. N3932) has shipped 103 outfitted airplanes (87 large cabin, 16 midsize), a nearly 81-percent rise from the 57 aircraft (52 large cabin, five midsize) handed over to customers in the same period last year.
Nextant Aerospace announced an order for up to 50 400XTis worth $202.5 million from Elkhart, Ind.-based aircraft charter firm Travel Management Company (TMC) yesterday at NBAA 2013. The agreement is for the conversion of TMC’s entire Hawker 400XP fleet. Deliveries to TMC begin next year and run through 2019.
